heyo, yes brace yourself for a stupid question. Is it good idea to re-wind 1/4" tape for a reel to reel so that the normal tape contact surface is flipped meaning the "bottom" side of the tape contacts the heads instead of the top? Would this show an impoved recording clarity and have less droppouts etc on tape with a questionable amount of lifetime left?

Don't hit me, i'm an analog newbie

In a word, no.

The results would be definitive of lo-fi to no-fi, and would possibly (depending on the tape) cause increased wear on the tape path.

What kind of tape is it?

- Digital-like Signal to noise, only without the signal
- Great for quiet passages. That is, completely quiet, as in silence

:D ;)

i'm unsure what kind of tape i've got, the guy sent me along a spool of it with the recorder so that I could test the machine. it should be 457 tape. Although i'm a fan of silence & space in music i'm not that minimalistic to enjoy the sound of only my reels turning:D. so guess, it's a no then :p single sided :o
