Alright I'm sorta a newbie at this stuff but I'm wondering what kind of amp with a sm57 would get CLOSE to this sound.... and does anyone know any specific compression settings w/ autotune for this kind of music.. my band really wants to record stuff like this at my place but were having troubles with guitar and vocals only right now.. I bought amplitube x-gear awhile ago and have been using that to record most of the guitars but I can't find a heavier tone..

Thank you!

Are you wanting a compressed distortion/overdrive effect?

Yea were looking for that pure/punchy with distortion guitar sound. Were using the british vintage amp model on the amplitube x-gear cause our jcm900 sounds kinda bad on the recording. It's not getting the thick amazing tone were looking for..

If you want a good guitar tone don't use effects pedals or computer software, that's the opposite of what you want to do.

Can you elaboarte on pop punk like one or two examples of what you want it to sound like.

Its to broad a spectrum these days....

But if i were ot make a suggestion as i record mostly punk stuff...

I was never happy with amplitube. Ever. I could have sat for hours and come up with nothing.

I tried multiple pedals Di into my PC. No good either. Always came out shitty. I can't say it was a lack of trying either. I could say i wasn't sure what i was doing, but i did try very hard.

Never happy.

I usually ended up micing an amp. We usually had access to a marshall MG something or other.

But since i have parted ways with my band i have gotten a Line 6 POD and am pretty happy with the results i've gotten out of that. I reccomend those if you have a few 100 kicking around.

What guitars are you tracking? I'd definitely think you're better off with that Marshall than amplitube. If you want it thicker sounding, double track it. Play with mic positioning. Try moving the mic toward the edge of the speaker... away from the center of the four. Miking any closer to the other speakers than the center cap increases your chance of phase problems.

If you want a vintage pop/punk tone, pre-new wave, check out some of the Fender tube amps.

If you want a more modern tone, go with a Marshall.
