Whenever i playback windows audio on my motu into my event tr-8's, there are sometimes these pop and crackle noises whenever the audio reaches a certain level. its very annoying. im using a TI chipset for firewire. what can i do to solve this problem? is it a buffer size problem?

Windows audio? Do you mean like media player? I am not sure if this is the case here, but I used to have a G4 tower in my studio, when the wireless card was enabled and I was playing back audio through iTunes to my Digi002, there was some kind of strange sound that would come through the speakers every time a network packet was sent (accessing web pages, or in the background clock sync). Disabiling the card solved the problem. Obviously, my G5 doesn't have internet access on it now. Strictly a Pro Tools machine. Perhaps looking into disabling the network card could help. Also, is it a clipping noise? or just cracks? Perhaps your monitors are too hot?

usually it is the buffer size, I had to up mine a considerable ammount before it stopped.

usually it is the buffer size, I had to up mine a considerable ammount before it stopped crackling and clipping. you can try and up your buffer size on both your program your using to record (if you are doing that) and/or your motu

Ok i had my buffer size set to 256. now i set it to 512. is it good enough?

that might do it, if not try 768, too much will give you latency in your recordings. my computer is set at 512 also, but I think it also depends on the overall speed of your computer. and you might want to record something with the higher buffer to make sure it's gone...

Well you can see my computer specs on my signature..so what do you think?

your daw is almost the same as mine, instead I have a geforce card instead of a radeon. Cubase should allow you to also increase your buffer size for your daw, not your motu. Your buffer size for your motu should be fine now, I use Sonar 5 Producer's edit. and my settings are 4 buffers in playback queue, at 24 bit depth/64 bit (my pentium is 64 bit), and I/O buffer size is 451kb with read/write caching enabled. Check your program you use for software buffer sizes also and that should do it.

I use Cubase...where do i go to change the buffer size?

Mindset, thanks for all the help you gave me till now..appreciate it.

sorry for the time of this reply, I had to find my cubase sx 3 disc and install it. anyways, I looked around in it for a brief moment, and saw that there was no place to set the buffer sizes like I can in sonar 5. So my best guess to you is that you'll just need to test it with the higher buffer size you have already set on your motu. If clipping/crackling still occurs, up it once more. That's my best I can do but it should work
