Hi,

I'm looking into getting some software. I've tried out some prog demos like Audition, Live 4.0... Besides much I don't like about either one is how they handle the plugins. Audition does no real-time work, and changes the wave form for every effect, but at the same time helps out the CPU. While Ableton Live does it all in real time, which is nice to hear while building on a track, but way to heavy on the cpu. I may be a total 'noob' with this, but does Cubase have a function to 'set' the waveform once the right combo of plugins have been found? Or any other program for that matter? I don't really want to export a waveform, and bring it back in everytime.

Excuse my total noobness.

In cubase SX2 anyway...

Sure! The best way I've found to do this in Cubase is adjust the chosen effects using the insert part of the mixer. Then once this is satisfactory save the effect as a preset. You can then right click on the audio track and put the wave file through that effect, load the saved preset and voila!

Do this in the same order as they appear in the mixer and you should have no problems.
But do bare in mind that the last two inserts are 'post fader'. Meaning that the level going into the effect has already been adjusted by the fader first.

You can then go back into the mixer and turn off all of those effects and save the overheads on your CPU.

The really cool part is that at any time you can nip back into 'offline process history' and amend, delete, or replace any effect that you've added... very nifty!

I hope this helps. :D

Keep in mind that only the SX versions will do that. SL and SE will not (as I discovered :( ). I believe that the S..3 versions will allow you to "freeze" a channel though. This takes a channel and creates a temporary audio file for that channel by processing all of the plugins and EQ on that channel and making a temp file so that you can still hear all the processing with out having the plug-ins tie up processor power. Of course you can not edit the plugins until you unfreeze, but then no program that I know of will let you do that either.

You can freeze VST files which is a life saver with CPU heavy v instruments but I didn't know you can do it with an audio track??

I'll be trying that later!

oh very cool. thanks for that. now all i need is the money, i wonder if they sell a student version?

I need to apologize. I thought there was a freeze for audio channels as well in SL3, but it seems there is not (at least that I could see earlier today). I never do that to my tracks, but though I had read that it could be done. Maybe the bounce feature can do that same thing. Also, maybe Cubase SX does it and SL doesn't.
