Please Mix This - A Challenge (really, very challenging)

... on the vocal cut...did you "see" or hear anything in that mid area, or is that something you normally do. It smoothed it out a lot, I think.

Not really. It was a "man with a hammer" thing lol. I dropped in a 3 band, had one left and thought I might as well do something with it :). I did a boost and swept around a little and found it was a little "nasaly" in that area, so I tried a slight cut there and it seemed to open up a little (I didn't think the track was particularly nasaly, mind you). I often try that "boost and sweep" approach to find uglies and then make a cut.

Alright, the guitar's are NOT touched! One is panned 100%left and the other 100% right, slight volume adjustment(boost)

drums are untouched, boost in db's again.(couldn't help it!):D I'm a drum FREAK!

Bass..now this i eq'ed! then buried it in the "bass tone" cemetery behind the kick!:D (pic to follow)

main vocal was compressed and i added some verb(preset:"vocal nice presence") boost in db's

harmonies were compressed and verbed(preset:"vocal natural reverb") panned to oppisite side's at about 35% a piece

steel and slide git's were compressed and panned to oppisite side's at about 40 to 50% a piece db cut.

That's it! a plan for "disaster!" :D

I'm gonna post some pic's of the eq for the bass, and the compression setting i used to compress all the track's, since i can't explain what i did!LOL!

I shall return!!!!!!

Some pic's too, not that it matter's!(page3):D very minimal approach. I'm gonna have to re-download these mixes and label them! I just can't figure out who's is who's!!!!!!

100% agree with pg about the drum's, but i just had to leave them in! I was trying to imagine a nice drum track, and i wanted to see if i could fit them in there right(totally selfish)! i have a little time right now, i might try a drumless mix! hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm(after i figure out these mixe's) damn this puny brain!:D

anyway, bite me Chris!..I mean, Thank's!

Pg...thank's for posting that info! and the other guy's too! I'm learning! go figure!?

I always quote the best parts, lol.

yeah, rick...I meant to tell you that you thanks...you were uploading pics when my computer was down.

One thought, just b/c I'm familiar with those presets. The "natural verb" setting is actually tamer than the one you used for the lead vocal ("nice presence")...although they're both very subdued reverbs (I ended up using the "nice presence" on my last mix :D)...Usually, I try to use a bigger verb on the backups, to put them behind the singer, but I actually kinda' liked the way that using the tamer verb on the backups brought them forward...it'd be interesting to hear that combination without drums...should sound like 3 guys singing in your living room, lol.

Anyway, thanks again.

Chris

Ha ha...not guilty today.

Hey man, mind posting what you did? Your mix ended up sounding like some EQing was done on the final?

Oh, and since you have headphones, and you're not an Autotune Nazi, please listen to the bastardized headphone version on my page, lol. Definitely calls for headphones. :D

Oh yeah, and turn it up obnoxiously loud and tell me if you actually DUCK at any point.

I dont know what the hell I did.lmao.I just turned cyber knobs man.LOL..Im not a softaware mixing type of guy. It's gonna take a lot of practice to even figure out what n-tracks and other programs even do....I have no clue about them.I wanted to get those wavs into my Fostex to mix it but my jaz drive bit the dust so I had no way of transferring them.

I'll check out the new mix you have on the cans.;)

I've remixed it again...

The bass is a challenge.. I've tried to eq out everything but the essential parts of it... ignoring the weird sound of it, and going for a firm body and honky presence...

Other than that, this mix should be a bit more open sounding..

Still the same simple drum programming.. but if you (chris) like what you're hearing, I could put some more time into it... Drumkit From Hell is a killer kit, and with some work, it can sound sweeeeet...

I have to say ( Chris my buddy, my good friend, old pal......love ya' and your children are wonderful! :D ), that's got to be the absolute worst sounding bass I've ever heard in my entire life.
Quite an accomplishment really.....I mean, I wouldn't have thought in this modern age we live in, that a bass could sound that bad but you did it! :D

lol, It was the black cat of my mixing session too.

Here's what I did

Vocals
healthy amount of limiting. Hard knee with a quicker attack than I think I should have used. I added some ambient verb.

Accoustic Guitar
Nothing

Second Accoustic
There was a second accoustic?

Slide
Healthy amount of reverb. Not too too loud but a good sized room. I wanted that sleezy slide sound, and the steel sounded pretty slick on it's own, so I figured the tune could hold it down. Also the drums seemed kind of wet to me so I was trying to sort of blend it all together a bit.

Steele
Nothing

Backing vocals
Nothing. Given more time I would have trimmed back the soft "ooohs"

Drums
I didn't have a de-reverber so, nothing

Bass
prett severe bottom roll off and mixed it in far too low

Mix Approach
I wanted all the lead parts, vocal, slide and steele, to have a strong presence. I think this worked fairly well since the two electrics creep in and out a lot. I wanted a good accoustic presence through the tune, but not overpowering.
I tried to mix the drums solid but not loud, and just give the bass some presence. I overdid it on the bass and left it way too short.
Pannig was pretty straight forward, I hung the eletrics as far out as I dared and positioned the backing vocals just inside IIRC.
I "norrowed" the drum track somewhat.

I don't know what the hell I did since I don't have all that 'puter stuff.

I know I cut a little 2k on the voice to get rid of the harshness.

I have to take the out of a CD player into two channels of my Mackie board to insert it into my recorder. So at that point, I EQ'ed things to make the track sound as good as possible as it was going to the recorder and then EQ'd it again when I mixed.
And I don't really remember what I did......I put a little plate and a vocal 'verb on the vox's.....ummmm, one was an Alessis QuadraVerb and the other was a Yamaha SPX-90......not that you want to make anything sound like my mix. :D

BTW.......do you cut your tracks like this all the time.....with 'verb, and compression and all that stuff on the bed track? Stop doing that! :D

Dry man.....they've gotta be dry as the desert sand.

Look man, lmao...I don't know what mp3 files you got, but there was no compression or reverb on those vocal tracks, was there? I eventually did, but I don't think I confused the files.

You're senile

there should be some smiley faces around the "senile" part, b/c I was kidding, but I'd still like to know.

Actually, I was talking about the drums and bass.............or was I? Can't remember.....that reminds me of the winter of '37....the snow was piled up so high, we had to lower the amps thru the chimney....so anyway, Tanker Johnny; he says, "don't you ever poke a kodiak bear again,"....of course, this was before we went on the Alaskan gold rush.....now that was something....eh!? get away from me! NURSE!!!!
:p

Sorry to obsess over this, but I just opened up the mp3 of my lead vocal track in the wave editor, and before I even listened, I could tell there was no compression...lol; that thing's all over the map, eh?

And if it were any dryer, it would ignite.

Now, the reason I'm asking, Lt.Bob, is b/c you're NOT senile, so I'm assuming the track ended up with verb and compression on it somehow; either a bus setting on your DAW, or some kind of encoding problem?

Note above post....I wasn't talking about the vocal track.....was there one? I can't seem to find my glasses........Tanker Johnny?.....Is that you? I'm getting so confused. Super Critic? Are you here to help me?!

Oh...lol.

The answer to that is, is no, I don't. I usually do all of my tracking to either a metronome or a loop that's just a kick and a snare.

When I play the electric (crappy) bass instead of an acoustic guitar, lol...I usually don't compress it at all. :D

Groucho had a nice mix. If the slide part had been written with that mix in mind, I'd say he's have it. It's got a nice overall tone to it as well as being nice and clear.
There were some nice mixes that left the slide farther back than I like. Maybe that's a country thing. Cary_01 was a good mix I thought, so was LT Bob's. Meshuggah did some good work on the tracks and I liked the second mix a lot.

I'm a toss up between Groucho, LT Bob and Meshuggah. I may have missed some.

Hey Mesh...thanks for posting that.

DON'T FORGET THE PSYCHADELIC HEADPHONE MIX

:D
:D

I didn't cheat on that one. :D

www.nowhereradio.com/honestmango/singles

"Juliet (Psychadelic Headphone)"

Now dammit, that's the best mix out of all of these, and I even used the freaking mp3 files to make it. (and a couple of FX).

Okay, Okay, ... I know...we've all heard this song MORE than enough times, but it's radically different. :D
