i know that this is an old beaten dog. i have done a search for good vocal mics under $500.00 and everyone has their own opinions. the mics that seem to stand out the most are the c1 and the 4033. i'm in a location that is a couple hours from a descent audio store(atlanta). the ones here are hole in the wall pawn shops(ft.gordon, ga.). there is this one store but i can't get any information over the telephone. the saleswoman is pretty lazy. she want's me to go in and demo the mics. i'm not experienced in what to listen or look for in a mic. she would only give me a few names of what they carry over the phone. they are not too many choices other than to go to them so i guess they have that arrogant attitude. i would buy from the net but i'm tired of waiting for stuff to come in through the mail, after my check clears. i do not have a credit card. she said that she had CAD, SHURE, SAMPSON,( AUDIO TEC's, but not the 4033). i have the MXLv67, and a sm58, i can trade in the 58 towards a better mic. out of those brands what would be noticeably better mics than the two i have now. i'm only going to use them for vocals ranging from harsh to soft. thank you. keep in mind under $500.00:(

i can get this one

these guys have an at4050 used for $250.00, but i'll have to send them a money order in the mail.

Say, if you don't want it, do you think could I have that number?

My friend, I wish there was a cut and dried answer to your question but there just isn't. Damn near all mics will be perfect on one voice/source and blow dead goats on another. I will say the 4050 is a very nice mic at that price if it's in decent shape.

okay

is the 4050 considered more favorable as a vocal mic then the 4033? out of the brands i mentioned above what model numbers will be recomended over the marshall 67 and the 4033-4050? i know it was stated that there is no cut and dry answer because my applications may vary differently from the person who is recominding, but i still want whatever advice from the experienced on this subject that they are willing to give. thank you.

for chessrock

i double checked my e-mail and it's for $299.00 but you can haggle them down, i have done buisness with them. heres the link

If I had a choice between a 4033 or 4050, I would buy the 50. It is more open and has a really nice sound... It is also a little more money, but if you can grab one for $299 in good shape, that is as much as a new 33, so I say go for it!

i thought they were the same thing -- only the 50 has multiple patterns.

I don't think they're the same ... I demo'd a 4033 and 4050 on my voice. It was like a Goldilocks scenario.

"This 4033 is too bright!"

"This 4050 is too sterile!"

There WAS a "just right" (couple of 'em actually), but neither were ATs. Jugalo, you have to test these mics on YOUR voice (if it's for you). Like Track Rat said, a mic can be fantastic on one singer and blow the goat on another.

thanks everyone

i'm off to demo some mics. i'm not experienced but i hope i pick a good one for my budget.

I could be wrong, since I don't own one, but I was under the impression that in addition to being a multipattern mic, the 4050 has a large diaphragm.

The difference between the two is analagous to the Shure KSM32 and KSM44, I believe.

I prefer C3 to the C1, for its multi-pattern versatility, and Rode NTK as a smooth vocal mic exactly at the $500 price point. Don't sell the 58!!!.-Richie

Take your checkbook with you to Atlanta. If this is a mic you're going to be depnding on for the next 3 to 6 months, it's certainly worth a day of your time to test them all in a big store to make sure you get what you need. You might even consider bringing your MXL V67 with you to compare it, so you are sure of getting something complimentary to it.

I did this in a Guitar Center once, and the salesguy (on a SLOW day) was kind enough to let me record about 10 different mics on a DAT tape in the recording room, after I gave him a deposit of $200.00 and told him I was definitely going to purchase SOMETHING from him -- I just wanted to hear all of them on my speakers in my studio before deciding.

He ran each mic into a Mackie 1202 and out to a DAT recorder and let my wife sing for a minute into each one, and then brought me the next one. I heard all the BLUE mics (Mouse, Blueberry, Cactus, Kiwi), Neuman 147, Oktavas, Rodes and a bunch more I don't remember. I ended up buying the Rode NTK later that week.

thanks

i'm going to do that. i'm hoping the guy would be cool enough to let me demo the mics. thanks everyone. man i wish that i can one day test out mics like you did screws. why would pick those mics over the 4050 richard monroe?

Jugalo, I suggested mics in the price range that I know work well. I don't know that I would pick them over AT 4050. That's a mic I know only by reputation (which is a good one), I've never used the mic personally.-Richie
