alright i have a peavey classic 50 tube amp. i want a distortion pedal i like th gain channel on th classic it's great for older and some newer rock stuff.i want to get a pedal that may help get a tighter distortion with maybe a lil more bottom .i play a les paul but my main has become a strat with a hot rails bridge .th only pedals i'm considering are ths ProCo Rat or maybe th Metal Master by Boss now i'm leaning toward th Boss for one thing i really dig Boss as i've tried DOD and Ibanez and i really dont care for them but i like th Rat........just need some informed opinions either way ......thanks

I know you werent a fan of the Ibanez, but check out the Maxon 808, which is a rip of a tubescreamer, and I think it has a hot function for more gain. I think the thing sounds awesome. If you dont want to consider it tough, go for the rat...the metal master sounds like 80s hell.

thanks

my problem with ibanez is they have a sound like they're in a bucket ,i have a chorus/flanger and i bought a boss chorus they're worlds apart i tried to put th flanger in my chain and when it is used it degrades my sound way too much . i haven't thought about th Maxon only because they looked like a cheap copy but, i will consider trying to find one and check it out ....on a side note some years back i had a chance to get a steal deal on a true TS9 ibanez and passed on it ,i hear they're expensive and very collectible now ...live and learn ......thanks and later

I like the Rat..It just sounds...Real to me..I don't know how else to explane it..TS9 is cool also but the Rat seems to have a little more range..Distortion pedels are tricky..So much depends on ones personal pickin'/fingerin' technique...One guy can love what someone else hates..Good luck

i'm pretty happy with my boss metal zone when i use it, but other effects, amp, pickups, playing style, the position of the moon, how many chickens you've sacrificed tonight, etc all play a part in the sound, so i would tend to lean toward going to a shop and playing them all.
