Please help I’m dying to make music!

Many of those VST instruments don't need a midi controller. They have a keyboard in the GUI or can even stand alone.

You can build songs in a track by playing with the midi blocks. Assign the instrument and loop it.

DEXED is awesome.
 
Protools never had really good MIDI handling. I'm told it's much better now, but it's not the got to DAW for MIDI matters.
