Peavey Renown400 Knobs

Hi MajorTom

I'll buy all of them if you don't need them. I know the blue knobs seem to be the ones that everyone needs for some reason, but it would also be nice to get the gray, and white knobs if possible.
By the way, what else did you strip from it? Black, chrome hardware? Any of the electronics, like pots? I can't seem to find the 10K pots anywhere. I know it's possible to substitute the 10K with a 25K, but I had some 10K, I would just put that in there to have it done the right way.

I wish Peavey would make a reissue of the 210 Renown.

I used the 2x12 cab for another amp, a Peavey Bravo (2xEL84), which I modded heavily, and repeated on a 2nd one that is still in its original 1x12 cab. I did use some of the pots, along with some caps and whatever that I scavenged for the Bravos, and a few other projects/repairs. What I have left is the chassis (no faceplate though) with the circuit board and whatever components are still in it, which does include 1 10K linear pot, and 2 stacked pots. I only have 3 knobs though...1 black, and 2 blue. I remember now that used some of them on some Lpad power attenuators that I made for several people a few years back.... I'll look some more, but I think that's it. I also have the 2 long chrome metal thingies that go on the top of the cab, along with the screws that go thru them and hold the chassis. Its not doing me any good - let me know what you want out of that. You can have it all for shipping + gas $, but honestly I would like to wait until after Christmas due to the long lines at the Post Office.

Update - I don't have the chassis, I have the circuit board with the rear aluminum strip and large heat sink, which has the back panel. The "pan" and the faceplate I think I threw away. The amp didn't work....

The best thing I got out of it were the 12" Scorpion speakers. One sounds better than the other to my ear for some reason. They have a nice compression to 'em, and a particular "honk" that sounds good with my modded Bravo. They are a little light on the bottom end for a 1x12. They are also pretty low efficiency as far as guitar speakers go, which is a good thing for me, since it is a little easier to get a decent sound at low volumes than high-efficiency speakers like a Blue Dog. They do have a bit of a cult following, I read somewhere years ago that Steve Morse used them in his 4x12's.

I have one of those old MX cabinets with 4-12" scorpions he used.

Hi MajorTom

Well, I would be more then happy to just get them three knobs, and the pots. Just let me know when, and if you want to. Don’t worry about the Chassis, my cab is in great condition. I have a 210W-RMS Renown 400 and the older 160W-RMS model. I didn't realize there were different Renown Solo series till I got the other one.

By the way, not sure if you knew, but you can buy the replacement baskets for the Scorpions. You just take the three bolts off the Magnet, and put the magnet on the new Basket for only $50 bucks and you have new speakers. Again, sorry if you already knew that, I just recently found this out myself.

In regards to the original S-12825 8ohm 12” Scorpion speakers that came in the Renowns during the early 80s; they are actually very efficient speakers. Their SPL 1W 1Meter on axis is 95.0db which is very efficient, and they were designed to break up when you crank them, also known as cone cry. I think it adds a unique characteristic to the sound. With a Boss DS1 distortion peddle, and the right Eq setting, this amp has a deep warm growl to it. The 210RMS model is not only crazy loud, but it has a mean bite with a low end that goes right through your body. sort of reminds me of the Ratt, or Dokken sound. But the amp is very..very clean also if you needed it to be. It has an interesting break up on the attack when you really drive it, but then it drives with consistency. I really love the amp.
I remember in the past, many people didn’t like Peaveys because they said they had no tone, and it was true. That was the beauty of the old Peavys, because you could built your own sound using any pre amp you liked without the amp coloring it. I haven't heard their new amps yet, I'm curious how they sound. I know their 5050s had their own tone. It would be so cool if a ton of people sent emails to Peavey asking them to make a reissue of the Renown Solo Series.

Send me your address in a PM.

Actually, 95 db @ 1 watt 1 meter is low efficiency as far as 12" guitar speakers go. I think most Celestions are in the 100 db range, give or take 1 db, and the Blue is 103db. The 1 watt 1 meter 1000hz is the standard spec, I have never seen a spec for 5, 10, 20, 40 watts, or lower freq's. I do have a theory - that the difference between speaker efficiency tends to disappear as you crank it up. The difference in SPL's in my Bravo between the Scorp and a Weber Blue Dog is dramatic at very low volume, yet when the amp is cranked, it is not - they are both ear-splittingly loud. I believe that any difference in SPL's at higher wattage is much more subtle. I do have an SPL meter, maybe one day I'll actually measure the difference. Being a church player right now, and out of the loud bar band scene the main thing I like about them is how they sound at low volumes.

I assumed that the Scorps were developed for sound re-inforecement, and not specifically guitar speakers...? Yeah I did know about the replaceable basket thing, that sure would be more convenient than having it re-coned. I don't anticipate frying the voice coil with my little 20 watt amp though. :D

Thanks MajorTom

Ya, I didn't realize them Celestions were rated that high with the 1W..meter on axis. And also feel the same about when you crank them up, you loose the efficiency. The db gets to a point where you can't tell the difference anymore. I was trying to figure out why Marshall cabs are so much louder than something like my amp. because the one Renown I have is 210RMS, and a Marshall half is 200RMS. I thought there was a difference between European ratings, but I guess it's more a manufacture thing.

And yes, I think you're right about the scorps, they were originally for PAs I think, they even say something to that nature on the label. But as far as replacing the speaker cones. I have to say, I'm a little disappointed in the quality difference from the originals which are 25 years old now in comparison to the new baskets I received. By the way, the one with the glue sticking out in the first set of pics below is a manufacture error, and is being replaced.
These were the replacements I got.

Like the old saying goes, and our parents always told us, "they don't make things like they use to". But again, I'm getting some replacements sent out because Peavey did acknowledge the quality of these baskets were not up to their normal standards. But still, it just seems like now days they eye things out, like when they put the center cap in, where is with the older speakers it seemed like a machine made things. They were perfect.

I just got all thee of them now MajorTom. That was strange. I longed in a few times in the last two days and there was nothing, I'm guessing it was a glitch with the forums. I PMed you a few mins ago, thank you for checking up!
