The guide that came with it (by Craig Anderton) talks about wiring the springs out of phase to cancel out some of the sproinginess from springs. You can see from the diagram the + and - on the spring transducers. You actually have to disconnect and rewire some of the transducers, which was a bit hairy, they're pretty tiny.
You're supposed to use shielded cable for some of it, and I didn't, which is why I think mine hums. Also, at the time I built it I just got the PCB, I've never actually checked the model number of the springs to see their impedance ratings etc. There used to be this surplus house here that had springs for $4 a piece, I couldn't resist. I built it quite a few years ago when I knew a lot less about that sort of thing. You could probably pt2pt the circuit too, or build it on a Radio Shack type proto board, it isn't that complex.
The hum in mine isn't that bad. You can hear it with zero signal, but it is masked just fine in a mix.
