Phil Spector SHOULD be given a great deal of respect in a recording forum, if he's come here to share his knowledge. I know I wouldn't start ragging on him about the charges to a situation where I don't know all the facts, and I'd be dismayed that some people might focus on that, to the exclusion of things I might learn about producing from him.
True story:
When David Crosby was in the Les Baxter Balladeers, I knew him and I thought he had a great voice and felt he was one of the best rhythm guitar players I'd ever heard.
After he joined the Byrds, he turned into one of the most insufferable, egotistical people you'd ever have the misfortune to meet. One time I saw him walking down the street, coming towards me. I actually turned and crossed over to the other side to avoid contact with him.
But, during that whole period he was being an asshole (now self-admittedly), when people specifically asked me what I thought of his singing and playing, I told them that I thought he had a great voice and felt he was one of the best rhythm guitar players I'd ever heard. I didn't bring up his being an asshole since that wasn't what they were asking about.
O.J. and Phil may indeed be lousy people, but if I'm talking football or producing, I would certainly listen with rapt attention and respect for what those two people accomplished in those fields. Especially if everybody else was also talking specifically about football or producing. It's not my job in life to be the defender of moral rightiousnous and pass judgement on them.
I think our differences are primarily generational. If I find someone distasteful to me for any reason, I simply try to avoid talking to them - about anything.
