overhead mic recordings?

I am currently using a pair of C1000s condensor mics for my drum kit, but am looking at other realtively cheap options. I find the C1000s a little shrill on cymbals (although they make my toms sound great). There of lots of posts that say great things about several mics, notably the Marshall 603, Octava MC-012 and the ECM8000. I have searched, but have not found a "mic shoot out" among these different mics used as overheads. Anyone have two or more of these mics that could record a hit hat or ride for a few seconds and post some MP3s? Or can anyone point me to where this has been done in the event I just missed it in my search? Thanks.

for hh, you'll want either the 603 or the mc012 with cardioid capsule, since the ecm8000 is omni.:)

To get up a decent drum sound the C1000's would be the least of your problems. :)

cheers
John

Got it!

Thanks Postalblue. Those overheads do sound good, a bit warmer in tone than my c1000s (more midrange I guess?). I'm pretty certain now that I'll sell at least one c1000s and pick up two 603s. I might kepp one c1000s around though, since I think it could sound great in certain situations.

That kick sounds great too. I've heard good things about the e604, now I see why. I'm still struggling to get a good kick sound with my D112, but It is almost certainly just a matter of me finding the right mic position and EQ, gating etc.

By the way, the webpage still gives me errors, but I was still able to get the clip.

geocities sucks big time

the e604 sounds good on toms and snare too. my only complaint is i have to do a serious high shelf on the snare to get it sounding the way i want. that's why i prefer the akg d3700, it's a lot brighter than the e604 and the sm57. i also tried a beta 57 on kick, and it sounded pretty decent. as soon as i get my atpro 25 i'll post some clips.

Cool. I just ordered an MXL v67m and picked up a MXL 603 on Ebay for cheap. I haven't heard much about using the v67m as an overhead. I got it mainly for vocals, but I'm curious how it would do one cymbals. Once I get both these mics, I'll do a mini shoot out comparing them with the c1000s as overheads. I am kind of curious to see which I prefer on my old ride. The sound of the ride is kind of dark, and I'm thinking the c1000s might actually bring out some nice highs in it. I'll post clips of whatever I come up with.

Hold on, I just reread you last post, Postalblue. I was thinking you used the e602 (Sennheiser's kick mic) on the kick. Did you really use the e604, those little clip-on tom mics? That's a pretty impressive sound from such a little mic. Where did you place the mic?

yup, it was the e604. it was positioned just outside the head's hole. i played with its distance from the head until i got the sound i wanted.
they're good on piccolo snares too.
as for the v67 vs. 603/c1000 thing, it depends if you're using the mic to capture the cymbals only or the whole kit. i think ld condensers are better for the whole kit IF you have killer mics. as you can hear in my recording, the 603 can get a decent sound from the toms, and it does capture a LOT of kick drum. the room you're recording in makes a lot of difference too. if it sounds nice, a 4 mic setup can be great, but if the room sucks, close miking everything is the way to go for me.
