There's someone who lives in a town nearby who has a DOKORDER 4 track rack mounted machine (1/4 tape) for sale. What are your opinions of dokorder machines? Worth a look, or should i just concentrate on fixing my 2 track toshiba?

Thanks,
T

Finding parts for a Dokorder, should you ever need any, will be next to impossible to find.

This is not a new situation either. Dokorder bought the farm more then 20 years ago at this point and even when they were in business, authorized service centers that could work on them and secure parts was damn near impossible to find and that was 20 years ago, when I owned a 4 track, 7140 model from them.

If you do find one, make sure it is in 100% perfect condition.

Cheers! :)

Thanks man!
how was the sonic quality of your old unit? If i dont need the 4 tracks (although it would be fun to play with), would any of the cheaper 2 track reel to reel units be just as good with respect to sound quality (like my toshiba) ? Are they dependable, or does the lack of available parts really make them too much of a liability to depend on for regular tracking?

Considering the ultra low prices that are out there on used TASCAM 32's, which do have parts available and sound fantastic, I would steer clear of any Dokoder machine unless it is next to free and in perfect condition.

When I had mine and it was working, it sounded perfectly good and deserving of the words "high fidelity" to describe their sound quality but, in my opinion, the TASCAM's sound better and are more easily serviceable, should service ever be required.

I have no experience with Toshiba reel to reel decks but, from an age perspective alone, I would steer clear of them too as parts and technicians who can work on those are long gone as well.

Cheers! :)

Right about parts availability...I had a Dokorder 7140 for a while and Loved the sound. Great low end for a 1/4" unit. Went to a fostex A-8, which is available for parts at this time, if anybody is interested
