hey, I have this new idea for online distribution and it will act as a sort of record label promoting "artists" online. anyway, I need some people willing to participate. what you need is 14 fairly well-recorded songs and a high quality photograph. just reply to this thread or PM me. I don't want to discuss it too much in the thread, but it's not going to cost you anything and you should actually make money from it if it works out - but I need some people to test it out with. you'll also be getting a free website already designed for you and a newsletter. people will be able to access these songs for a year. after that I don't want to go in to how it's going to work out quite yet, but I'll be sure to show it to you guys here once it's finished...

man I'm rambling, anyway... need just a few people/bands who have 14 well-recorded songs and a decent photo that are willing to volunteer.

dont get me wrong here but, unless your idea is revolutionary, chances of
succeeding are around 0%. New music/artist community websites are popping
up on the internet daily and very very very few are adding something new
to the music marketing scene

it may very well be... and there's not going to be much of a "community"

nope, you will get no reviews, I might add a forum later, but I doubt it. there aren't going to be ads on the website... this is about a connection with the artists and the listeners. the artists getting paid for their work. it's not like where you buy a song for fifty cents or however much it is now. it's not going to be cluttered, the basis of it is just the music.

I mean you're right, it might not work at all or it might be a good idea, but I haven't seen it anywhere and I've searched. there are similar ideas, but nothing exactly like this. I will be doing a lot of internet promotion/marketing for the artists themselves, not the website.

I have to disagree, IMO they are adding a whole heap of shitty music available for the masses to have access to that they never wanted access to in the first place. :D

But on a serious note, you need to be selective of who you allow to be on the site. Then you MIGHT have a shot IF you have a good sense of the direction the next 'big thing' will come from. But other than that it will be another site with amature musicians that suck more than was thought possible to suck before.

it's ok if they suck. they will earn the money for themselves still, I'll just be promoting it more and making it very accessible online.

archive.org has something like this. internet record labels.

I think you missed my point.

No one will go to the website to even bother looking for new bands if 99.9% of the bands suck donkey shit. No one likes digging through piles of shit when they don't even know if there is a bottom to it.

er I got your point... I just can't really explain why this is not the case. I mean maybe you're right as well, maybe no one will want to go to the site. but this has more to do with... the bands promoting the site at their own shows and such... sort of. umm, hmm, I can't... er... I'll just tell you when the site is up.

Yeah... that's pretty much what happened to mp3.com - It became a huge dumping ground for any hack with a mic ... half the crap there was so sub standerd it shouldn't have existed in the first place.

On the other hand, consider this: Any product (and I do mean ANY product) or service WILL sell online IF (and ONLY if) you can find your target audience... Got an idea or product? Some where SOMEONE will want it - you just need to know HOW to find those SOMEONE(s)...

There are plenty of sites that allow slected bands to have a presence on the site and expect the bands to then promote it themselves to get traffic. Sorry, i really can't see what is unique about your idea, maybe I'm missing something.

Sounds to me like he's talking about this formulae:

1) Set up a site that hosts websites for other bands. (Free I assume?)

2) Allow the bands to sell their stuff (CDs T-Shirts etc...) - Give them a "Shopping cart"

3) Expect the band members to tell everyone to go to the site to hear / buy their stuff. (Which will happen - more or less)

The problem with this is, the band will give a link directly to THEIR page, not the site's main page. And if they did give the Address to the main page, it had better be REAL easy to navigate to the band's page otherwise people just get pissed off and leave.

Is this even remotely close to what you're suggesting? If not then please specify, cause you haven't relayed any message beyond what I just outlined...

protected music files, download for 3x free listens, pay and unlock it for further use if you like it? done before

artist pages/ webshop intergrated in musicfiles? done before

pay for downloads by phone, sms, creditcard, whatever? done before

hum the tune directly into ones ear by phone after payment? not done before, might work

sort of like that, but not really... I don't even really want them to go to the main site unless they are artists. I mean they can ... er, let me just tell you when it's up.

NO! We wanna know NOW! YOU brought it up dammit! :D :D :D

I think I see more or less where you're going, but I'm still curious as to how you're gunna handle payment for the artists?

haha ;) it'll be up in like a month, it's not any of the "formulae" you've listed or anything dendanna said. it's not terribly original, it's an idea from another area that I've applied to online music distribution. I just don't think it's been done quite like this... but very similar. artists will get most of the money, right now through paypal. it'll be cool though, not cluttered at all. and that's why I came here first - to get GOOD music.

How are artists getting money for this? Can they sell their music through the website? I'm not seeing how this is any different from other online distributers.

yeah I know because I didn't explain how because that would be revealing the secret
