old telefunken tube preamps
Hi! I have a chance to buy an old telfunken mixing desk, all tube, with separate preamp modules. Type V101 and V102, for 400 dollars. Is this a super-deal, or should I be very careful?

Just because it's vales doesn't make a console sounding good or maybe more important, useful as a tool in today's recording situation.
Does it have inserts, direct out's, e.t.c. So frankly...ask yourself if the console will do the job for you... if not it will only heat up your control room.....

If it's in good working order then I'd say it's probably a good price. But that is not based on usefulness or suond, but on pure vintage value.

As Rambo sais, you have to think in terms of if it's useful to you.

Or, if you have reason to think you get the low price because the seller is unaware about the vintage value, you might buy them and sell with a profit. :-)

It's probably a good deal..but be very very careful. Like people said in earlier posts, you have to ask yourself is it gonna fit your needs? Also be prepared to do alot of work replacing old caps and tubes. Alot of cleaning. Alot of maintenance. If your into doing the work and it fits your needs, it may be a good deal.

oooooooooohaaa! From what I've heard, the old telefunken pres are about as good as it ever gets. $400 is an absolute steal. That's the kind of pres that the Beatles used. I'm not sure about the models offered to you, but the V72s are the ones people would *kill* for. Check out http://www.tab-funkenwerk.com/ perhaps you can ask them about your particular model - but don't tell them where it can be had! Jesus Christ, 400 bucks for a Telefunken console....!!!!

Woah rossi, dont blow your load just yet....telefunken made their share of junk too. the beatles did not use this desk, even if the beatles did use this desk it's no reason to buy it. more research has to be done before it can be determined if this is a good deal or not. these pre's are not a hot thing on the vintage market, is there a reason for that?

And just for the record, I dont think I'd kill anyone for a v72. I'll gladly pay a couple hundred bucks for one.

If it were me, I'd buy the desk in a heartbeat....I like these kind of projects. It's gonna need work, and alot of maintenance.

if you don't buy it............ give me the address 'coz I will

Hey, I'm actually a pretty poor guy, but I'd pay $400 even if I couldn't actually use it. Just looking at it would make me horny :D But maybe that's just me.
You're absolutely right in that the desk is probably gonna need a lot of maintenance etc.
Well, I don't have a V72 pre, but I've heard that a great many people prefer it to anything else, especially on vocals. Even the later solid state telefunken pres must be *very* good. A lot of pros use them in big studios, I've been told.

It's in Holland, by the way. The guy said he was a technician himself, but doesn't have time to fix it... which makes me wonder if it's fixable at all...

most likely needs reconditioning, as all gear that age does, and in nederland is prima

Is it stereo or mono?

Even if the board turned out to be junk you might be able to rack the pres. If you did you could probably get your $400 back on ebay even if they suck!

One place to get a good answer would be to go to ProSoundWeb Rec and ask in Fletcher's forum. He knows a lot about the old Telefunken models, and would be happy to share his knowledge.

Rossi's suggestion about www.tab-funkenwerk.com is also excellent.

They know everything about Telefunken products.

I know quite a bit about vintage gear but am not aware of this Telfunken you wrote about.

I buy all my vintage gear from a company called Edib.
They are real experts and have never failed to come through.
I asked them yesterday for you about this and got this very short reply from them by email. It won't tell you all that much about the pre's but more perhaps on their value.

Hey Moshe !

Be very careful.

I have this mixer in the storage, with the same modules. You can have it free, but it will cost you to fix and overall . I am not sure it's worth it for you........

If I get a chance I'll call them up and ask for more descriptive details. Just remember not all vintage gear is worth investing in.

Sorry, I was wrong!

Hey Dalon, a guy from a German board who's into Telefunken pres just filled me in that the V101 and V102 pres are NOT cult or even "KULT" items and that they're not worth more than the price offered to you. Sorry about my unjustified enthusiasm. Still, the desk might look nice.

okay, thanks guys! Maybe I'll buy one pre, but not the whole desk!

Thx

Any info about these?

The seller wants $950 for the pair. He's currently rackmounting them.

Cheers

OH, Sjoko, the same guy is selling a 12 channel 60's D&R tube console. He claims it recently went through maintenance. He's asking $1950 for it. I can email you his address if you're interested. I can't afford it myself, alas.
