Oktava mods are back

Thanks for that personal insight Robert. I don't doubt its true. As you suggest, greed has no borders.

I had a momentary lack of restraint and clarity when I wrote above. I think the root of what bothers me is Oktava - the brand - could have been something really special with compentent brand stewardship and accompanying manufacturing QC. They had everything they needed - a colorful history spaning the cold war times, some legendary products like the ML-19 ribbon mic, some fine contemporary condenser products and an opportunity to ride the peristroika wave of openess towards the West.

But instead, both manufacturing quality lapses and greed-based brand mis-management on the part of the McKays has tarnished what could have been a leading post-Soviet brand.

Was it the Chinese manufacturer or the McKays that suggested changing the silver-plated connecting pins on the O12 to unprotected copper? We'll probably never know. My guess is the McKays simply requested the best price and the vendor came up with ways to comply.

Yeah, denouncing inferior products is doing the right thing and is being helpful. But often Oktava in Tula and the vendor in China bear the brunt of the bad rap and the largely invisible McKays escape accountability.

I'm planning on having a whole weekend of that. ;)

Yup, the CM (Contract Manufactuter) isn't always the problem.

Have a great weekend - RD

I exchanged emails with Scott Dorsey about it, and he said that 5G should work OK. His only caveat was that it might take a bit longer for the mic to stabilize when first powered up. As far as I'm concerned, that's not an issue. So I'll give them a try. But I've still got to track down some decent caps for C1 before I'm ready to warm up my soldering iron.
I finally got all the parts and performed the Dorsey mods on my MC012s. The first one took forever, the second one went pretty quickly. I can't really give you a report yet - it may be a while before I get to actually use them for real music - but they do seem to have a much extended low end, and also seem a bit cleaner at the top.

The 5G resistors didn't turn out to be a very good choice. They worked fine, but it took the mic almost a full minute to become operational after power was applied. I replaced them with the 1G resistors, and power up was pretty much immediate.

I used silver mica caps for C1. They're physically quite large, but with careful positioning they do fit.

The hardest part of the mod was replacing the tantalum electrolytics. It turned out that the replacement parts (yes, the EXACT parts specified in the article) wouldn't fit - the leads were too thick for the holes in the PCB. So I had to actually use a small awl to enlarge the holes. That was a bit scary, but I managed to get it all done without breaking anything.

Glad it went well. I think 1G ohm is plenty and can't really tell that much differenct between 1G and 2G. I never tried a silver mica in this mic but it REEKS in the Oktava 319. Waaaaay too bright. Talk about ice picks in the ears, sheesh!
