I see this thread!

I just wanna put in my 2 cents!

I agree!, i whole heartedly agree that saying something is hot or not is an opinion. But there is a fine line between hot music and good music. Unfortunately my generation for some reason can't tell the Damn difference anymore. Like the original poster said i too am kind of getting fed up with the lack of willingness to change ones methods if they don't work!

Lets be real about it! I am tired of hearing nothing but radio heads but am even more tired of people on the internet who complain about the radio and then make songs like the ones they hate! What the hell is all that about!

Here's an example:

Regular rapper: man i can't stand the radio, all they play is these wack ass rappers, i can rap better in my sleep. I'll show them, ima make songs like Dip Set and the Lox. Ima bring "real" music back! (goes home and makes a gangsta song about drugs sex and killing people and how he's sooooo real in these streets)

See what i mean! how the hell is this going to change anything along the lines of whats on the radio. Be different and learn your craft, don't be gangsta, be your damn self. if your going to make a song for people to listen to then do us all a favor and make a song worth listening to!

See some people don't see the difference between story telling and telling the truth lol. But anyway, I agree. Make your music entertaining by all means, but mix up your styles a little bit. So what if you find yourself doing different types of songs, that helps your versatility and your rhyme delivery, but don't get stuck in straight gangsta or straight dance, be original and don't be afraid to mix shit up every now and then.

I mean why not do a song where you're trying to be funny and entertaining and then flip the script on the next song and make it something deep and real and heartfelt. All of the legends I know of could do this in their own way. I think music is an equal blend of heart, soul, thoughts, life, business, love, and ego. Learn how to get all of those elements into your tracks.

On The Real With I Have Read In This Thread The Majority Of The Replies In A Post Should Be Critique I Dont Come To Hear Good Job Or Thtas Hot I Come To Hear Yo Your Kick Is Pann To Far Left( Good Looking Buy Beats) Or Your Snare Is To Loud (thanks Chalin) Or Stuff Like That If I Want To Post To Feel Good I Would Be Posting On Another Board. So As A Whole Lets All Stop Talking Bout The Good Only Or For Every Good Point You List List One They Need To Work On. If They Take It Personal Then Fu** Them The Members Of This Community Know The Purpose Of It. We Cant Let What We Got Be Lost By The Impersonal Nor Can We Lose Good Members To It.

I try and be honest as possible BUT, i try and keep in mind what the person wants feedback on. for example there may be a song that sounds like trash to an untrained ear but to a trained ear it may be a hot joint. what i mean is, if you ask me what i think about your song I'll probably listen to the beat, delivery, content.

if you ask me to check out the mix then that's a different animal. a song may have all of the right ingredients hot beat, hot lyrics, hot delivery but the mix may make the song sound like crap. i know that a lot of people do PRE PRODUCTION so i try and look beyond the mix unless asked otherwise. a lot of us have beats that may sound flat and lifeless until you get them MIXED AND MASTERED ( I keep preaching about this) some of us are NOT, no matter how many plugins or peices of hardware we have scratching the surface of a Professional Mix or Master job and some of us here ARE polishing our stuff up like professionals.

I also try and step outside of my DIRTY SOUTH GANGSTA GRILL box and appreciate all types of music. I may not buy your record but i could still appreciate it's creativity and the hard work that was put into it. what i'm trying to say is before someone calls a song WHACK they may be overlooking certain things that are beyond the artists resources at the moment.

Do you think the people that buy cds have "trained" ears??? To them, its just gotta be HOT no question. I try to look at it like, "If I wasnt making music...would I think this is hot?" When a producer does a critique you might hear something like "Yo, I like the way you rolled them snares or hats, etc etc." You wont get that from the average listener, they will tell you point blank if they are feelin it or not -- with them its ALL or NOTHING.

That same principle applies to your second point. Sure, the good folks at HR can appreciate music that wasnt pristinely recorded (cuz thats how most of their music is!), but try takin that record to a major radio station! Youd get looked at like you were crazy. The average listener (that doesnt happen to know you), doesnt wanna look past ANYTHING. There are too many other records out there that dont require this extra treatment.

Thats why I tell it like it is. And at this point, I couldnt care less if someone got their feelings hurt. I dont come here to be anyone's friend, hold anyone's hand, or do WHATEVER youre doin when youre not "giving it to someone straight." This is a business that everyone is looking for a way into. Theres too many chiefs and not enough indians. YOUR PRODUCT HAS TO BE ON POINT. Thats really the bottom line.

you are not understanding what i said. when i say trained ears i mean anyone who can spot a hit regardless if it's professionally recorded. i take EVERYTHING that comes through here as pre production unless it's otherwise stated that it's going on some sort of cd. i'm not going to say the song is HOT and the mix sounds like garbage. i'll more than likely point that out. if it's a hot song and a descent mix i'll let that ride because most of the time i'm listening on computer speakers anyway. i do see your point and i know that i hold my end down when it comes to honesty because i know how important honest criticsm is for my growth as an artist.

i think the problem is that most of us see things differently me and some here see others wanting feedback on something that's going to be professionally touched in a later stage and maybe you and some see these songs as finished products. Crunk i do agree to you on a certain extent but you have to take into consideration the three different types of artists that come here looking for feedback

ARTIST A = PRODUCER
some people are not clear in their posting but if i'm asked to check out a song and the rapper and engineer were garbage i'm not going to knock the producer. i'm going to see beyond the mix and rapper

ARTIST B = RAPPER
same as above, if rapper x asks me to check out his flow, i'm going to try and look beyond the production and mixing if i have to to be able to give him an honest critique

ARTIST C = ENGINEER
if engineer x comes in and asks us to check out his song then i'm going to tune in mostly to the quality of the recording

some people like myself do all three although on this next cd i've stepped out of the engineering chair. so you have to be able to see all of this.

to be honest if you expect things to be critiqued the way i think you want them then hell, i would say most people here don't have the professional sound and i'm speaking for MYSELF mainly.

i think the best thing would be for clear communication. i know when i ask for a review i make sure to point out what i need the review on because i'm mostly aware of what's going to be stepped up by a pro. i just need to know what i can do on my end to step things up.

i feel where you are coming from and i think that this is a good thread, like i said clear communication is the best way to get results.
