Yes, this is normal. Being a cardioid pickup pattern, the "live" side is the one with the gold dot on it and the dead side 180 degrees, where you were getting the muffly sounds.

O.K then another question, Does this mean that when miking an acoustic guitar for instance, that I would point THAT side of the mic at the source, or just point the MIC at the source in a NORMAL manner,[or is this purely subjective to the end goal]?

Waaasssup !
This is probably a really dumb question,{belonging in the sub-newbie forum],I have purchased a new NT 1 from guitar center- and when using the mic, I have noticed that the pickup pattern seems uneven.
Basically the sound on one side of the capsule-[gold coin shaped thingy inside the wind screen,]whatever-[sorry] seems to be very crisp-strong signal etc, where on the opposite side, [180 degree]-seems to have less presence-and is slightly muffled.
Is this normal? or did I get a lemon.
The mic seems to have the super sensitivity that i expected, and other than noticing this through my headphones it sounds very nice.
Any replies would be much appreciated

If you were micing an acoustic you would have the gold dot side facing the acoustic. By "normal manner", if you mean point it like a SM57, no (unless that sound works what your doing). Generally, you want the live side facing the source. Distance and angle are up to you as far as the sound your trying to capture. One possible placement, the gold side parallel with the strings, 2 feet out from the 14th fret. Or slightly angled towards the bridge - experiment with placement until you get the sound your after.

Emeric: well, I never knew that, although it turns out I've been singing and playing into the gold dot all along anyway. After reading this thread, I went back to the NT-1 instruction guide, and found nothing about this there. Strange and strange. You'd think they'd give basic information about sensitivity patterns of the mic.
