"noise" in the background of the MR8

I suggest not using extension cords...Period, if you can at all avoid it. Also, I don't know if you have COSTCO nearby but they have 128 cards for $49.95. Do you find that the 128 limits your tracks?

I was using a nice power strip/surge protector and had no problems - I wonder if it was coincidence or if the extension cord was part of the problem. I still wonder why restarting the machine fixes the problem, though. I'm tracking my vocalist tonight and will be using both headphone jacks (great feature!), so we'll see what happens. Still no answer from Masaki at Fostex.

I find the 128 card to be very limiting, although deleting the "undo" file helps free up space. Have you found acceptable cards at Costco? The only thing I ever see there is SanDisk and they are on "not supported" list from Fostex.

So have you guys e-mailed fostex about these problems? Is it possible for them to patch it to fix those problems?

I'm looking to possibly buy the mr-8, but I'm curious about these problems.

Thanks,

Compact Flash Cards

So far I have used a 128M card made by PNY (bought at BestBuy) and a 256M Viking card from Amazon.com successfully with my MR-8. I don't think either brand was on their approved list.

I have a digital camera that uses Compact Flash, these two cards were ones I have used with the camera. One problem with the Viking card was that at first the MR-8 was not able to open it: it shows a track with --:--:-- for time, and I can't open up the menu to format it. But after I formated the card with my camera, the MR-8 was able to read it. I reformated it on the MR-8 and was able to start recording on it. I have recorded a 3:45 minute song on this card. It held 6 recorded tracks and the mixed down track on 7/8, and I was then able to generate a WAV file also. All this was done at "NORMAL" mode (high fidelity). I did clean up all unused tracks before I attempted to convert of WAV.

Hope this helps.

That's good news about the PNY, since they are actually available at places like Best Buy.

I'still haven't gotten an answer from Fostex, although I emailed the tech directly instead of using their support form. I'll try that.

Even with all the little problems, I'm having a ball. The sound really is great, and it really is a cool little critter! I did some editing in club tracks last night, and then put it back on the card, it really was a breeze, and then did some recording, put it back into club tracks, edited a bit more and then made a stereo wave file out of club tracks, so it really is a lot of fun!

That ability to back and forth with a computer is what really sets this unit apart. Even the higher end units like the Tascam 788 can't do it like this.

Recorded vocals tonight and I'm still knocked out - plugged a Samson R11 mic (they came three to a box for about 50 bucks - we got them with our PA) into the XLR on the MR-8, used the Tube mic model and hit 'record'. The result sounds like something out of Nashville - simply amazing for a device at this price point.

No more headphone distortion, although I just got some "hum" with my Takamine plugged in. Still seems like a power thing, as it went away for a bit when I moved my cables around.

The hum might be just a grounding thing, (and if it is, you may want to make sure that you've got everything well grounded) I had the same problem with my Applause ukulele, so I tried it with batteries and the hum went away, but like I mentioned earlier, the batteries go very fast, I may have got a total of an hour total out of it.

I'm sure it's a grounding thing, since touching the metal cover on my cord made it go away. This was the same outlet where I was getting the headphone distortion, so it could be from the TV or heater, etc.

I still can't get over the sound - prior to this I was using Cakewalk with an Event sound card and never got such clean recordings.

Heard back from Fostex on the headphone distortion. The tech said it sounds like a bad unit, which is obviously not the case if several users have experienced the same thing. I've asked if there is any incorrect sequence of events during normal usage that could cause this.

Everyone who has experienced the distortion on one side of their headphones needs to contact Fostex (the address I have is matt@fostex.com). Since their BBS was down for so long, people are posting here and Fostex is oblivious to these issues.

Clearly this isn't caused by defective units (unless they shipped a whole crate of bad ones...)

Keep us posted as each of you contact them, so we don't get that "you're the ONLY person to have this issue..." crap that these places are notorious for.

Great! I've dealt with Masaki in the past and he (she?) was very quick and thourghough with answers. This Matt character has been pretty terse.
