I have an allen & heath mixwizard 16:2, and an Otari MX5050 8 track. I have an 8 channel male xlr to trs going from the trs direct outs on the board to the inputs of the tape machine, yet I'm not getting any signal on the tape machine. I know the machine records, as i can record a signal from the on board oscillator. The view meters also work, because they all register the oscillator as well. The snake is brand new, so i doubt it would be that. The outputs send the signal at 0 dBu, so it should be hot enough. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Can you record a signal other than the oscillator, from an outside source?

That's a very good question. I have no other pre's at my disposal at the moment, and the only mics i have are phantom powered. I have to dig out a 57 or something and just go direct in and see. I'll try that tomorrow and let you know. In the mean time, if there are any more helpful suggestions, that would be great.

An old (therefore good for a say a volt, you don't need any more) AA battery at the input of the Otari will give you some kind of register on the meter and confirm if the recorder is accepting signal.

I tried the battery things, and did get a signal. So I know the inputs of the tape machine are good. The outs of the mixwizard are balanced I believe, and the ins of the otari are unbalanced, could this be the problem? The snake i'm using is XLR to TRS.

i checked the wiring diagram, it says 3 is hot 2 is is cold and 1 is ground. But it says that for 2 conducter unbalanced, you need a jumper between 1 and 2. This doesn't really make sense to me. I tried it just using alligator clips to hold the jumper in place, but I didn't get anything. But I'm not convinced that the alligator clips made a solid connection.

I actually just checked the Mixwizard manual, and it says that pin two carries the + signal, and pin 3 carries the - signal. The otari is definitely pin 3 hot. So I think That is the problem. Any thoughts?
