Just ordered one of the new PK47 capsules from John. In a conversation with him he told me the specs are dead on to the K47 capsule, which is used in later versions of the U47. Going to try it in comparison to an M7 capsule I have in similar circuits to see how it measures up. I really have high hopes, as this would be an affordable way to step up to that sound.

I'll let you know what I think. It may take a while before I'm ready.

I'm really excited!

...but that IS just a roll of quarters in my pocket!

Do you suppose he'll ever update his website to reflect this (and other) newer product? I've sent him emails in the past and found it very difficult to get information about his products.

How much is this new capsule?

It is unusual for a gearhead to have any $$$ whatsoever. :D Congrats on both counts. :D Seriously, post when you have something for us to give a listen. I wish I had your electronics talent. (turns green with envy) Good luck.

Capsule is set for delivery on Monday. I am etching circuit boards tonight!

Yeeeeee!!!

Just opened the box. This is a beautiful capsule. The only thing that is unattractive is the paint on the screws, but once it's in the mic you won't see that. I compared it to one of my M7's and the drill patterns are indeed the same. Very accurate as far as I can tell. The dimensions and geometry look to be correct. Single backplate. It came packaged the same way a Blue Cactus capsule would be packaged in a nice case.

I better get busy!:)

Haven't really decided what fully to use it in. I have a Nady TCM 1050 that's been modded, so most likely I'll use it in that so I have a multi pattern mic. I also have an MXL 960 I'm gutting and putting in a circuit based on the U47, but using a 6205 tube and a Lundahl transformer, but I have an M7 already set aside for that one. I also have a 992 that I machined into a U47 clone with an EF14 tube and a replacement BV8 style transformer. Again, I have another M7 I was going to use in that.

I'm a little indecisive.

phil what was the cost of the u47 capsule? good luck.

$245. That's a really good price considering a K47 from Neumann will be more than $400 and a Blue capsule will also be around $400. Just do a search on eBay for "microphone capsule". That's the only place I've seen it, but I ordered mine from John on the phone.

Peluso PK47 capsule:

Hooooooooooooo-doggy!!

I decided this sucker was going to live in my modified Nady TCM1050. If I didn't like it with this circuit I would change it to something else. Looks like I'll be leaving it alone. This is a serious capsule! No Question! I'm not sure the transformer in there is good enough to handle this capsule, so I'll be ordering a Lundahl later on. That should be worthy. For now I have a very, very nice 9 pattern mic.

Sibilance? Gone! The high end is smooth and silky. Almost creamy!

Bass is tight and big. I think a better transformer is going to reveal just how big.

Midrange is thick and chewy! Just awesome! It's a mouthful!

You can tell there is something special going on with this capsule! John got it right. It's full range but sounds so much thicker than any capsule I've heard. I'm very happy I bought it. I will be recording some samples this weekend and will post results.

Next project is to complete the rebuild of the MXL 960 with a real M7 and a circuit based on the U47.

I have decided to call that project: "Spirit of 47".

I'll keep you posted.

sounds nice. Is the cek 367 capsule that peluso makes of any comparison to this one?

cant wait to hear the results

how about the tab-funkenwerk transformers? what is your experience with those?

Probably the best transformers you can buy, which is why they cost so much.

Oliver even builds them with NOS laminations. They are very accurate to originals.
