Here’s a new one to check out. Any mixing help would be appreciated. The low end is giving me a hard time. Drums too bright? Dense mix, so hard to understand the lyrics at times?

Thank you!

Robot Hero

Sunsets are nice
I wanna be your hero
Your X’s an O’s
My 1’s and 0’s

I might be faster than you
But this is all I can do
PS don’t leave me out in the rain

I’d fly away
But they won’t let me on an airplane
It’s my holiday
Not this time but every other weekend

I might be faster than you
But this is all I can do
PS don’t leave me out in the rain

I do what I do, and I don’t need to sleep
Just plug me in, And fuses are cheap
If I’m counting I’d be your number 5
Shorting all the circuits but I’m kind of alive

It’s my Holiday
I wanna be your hero
It’s my holiday

Robot Hero

Sunsets are nice
I wanna be your hero
Your X’s an O’s
Together with my 1’s and 0’s

I might be faster than you
But this is all I can do
P.S. don’t leave me out in the rain

I’d fly away
But they won’t let me on an airplane
It’s my holiday
Not this time but every other weekend

I might be faster than you
But this is all I can do
P.S. don’t leave me out in the rain

Don’t make a mistake, don’t let the show stop
Just doing my best to be a robot
I do what I do, and I don’t need to sleep
Just plug me in, and fuses are cheap
And if I’m counting I’d be your number 5
Shorting all the circuits but I’m kind of alive

It’s my holiday
I wanna be your hero
It’s my holiday
Your X’s and O’s
I wanna be your hero

I would remix the drums - they aren't quite sitting with instruments - or it might be the instruments not quite sitting with the drums - whatever it is that is kind of bluring the vocals at times. It's great slacker song - I want to hear the vocals more forward - but still retain the vibe that they have - so maybe you can't do both.

Yeah, it’s tricky for sure! I want it to sound big but still hear the vocals.

I did put the drums pretty loud and up front. Maybe lower them in the mix a little? Or maybe just the overheads a little quieter? Or maybe just make them slightly darker to let the vocals pop out a little more? I’m leaning toward just pulling the whole drum bus (or just the snare) back a dB or 2. Thoughts?

I'll have to listen to it a few more times.Initially I don't think the drums are too loud -

I agree that the drums are a little too forward in the mix - and stick out from everything else as opposed to sitting in the mix properly. And I'd also bring that vocal up just a little. Overall - I like the song and think you're about 90% of where you need to be with this track. Well done sir.

Thank you for the feedback and mixing help! I’ll make some changes tonight and repost.

Ok, I backed off the volume of the drums, more so in the beginning where it’s overall quieter. I remixed the snare and feel it’s sits a little better but still keeps its snap and punch. The vocals have more room to breathe. I pushed up the volume of one of the vocal leads at the end that was pretty buried before.

The open hat at the end sounds a little weird now (starting at 1:40 where the open hat sounds louder and crisper on beats 1 & 4)…probably a compression issue somewhere. I’ll have to figure that out. Cymbals a little bright now too?

Thank you for your help with this!

Way Better mix - the vocals are really good - although the opening lines aren't as articulate as the rest of the song -but the song drives forward now - as for the HiHats - yeah I hear that - it sounds like a programing mistake - like the velocity is off and the 2 and 3 - are those programed or real? - I didn't notice the cymbals being too brite - I would call it to splashy - and it's not everyone - actually they sound disconnected from the track.

All real drums. I’m not the best drummer…or recording engineer…or mixing engineer….so that explains all of it!

I’ll play with it. Gotta be a compressor somewhere, maybe on the main drum bus that I made work a little harder so it’s pulling down the cymbals on beats 2 and 4 with the snare leaving it louder on Beats 1 & 3? I don’t know. I’ll figure it out.

Also, I appreciate the comment about the splashy crashes. I have 17, 18, and 19 inch crashes. The 17 is pretty splashy sounding. It’s awesome for certain accents and to stand out against other cymbals…but I should concentrate on saving it for those hits instead of using it so much (it’s closest to my snare so I go there a lot). I should swap spots with one of my mellower crashes.

Thanks for your help!
