Thanks for the feedback.

(Yes, I am bypassing the digi002 preamps by going into the inputs on the back, 5 and 6)

It's good to know about scrapping the amp box :)

I actually put the fender in the amp box to record what I have now.. Which definitely didn't help the already weak guitar sound..

We brought the fender out and put it beside the 5150/Orange and tried both and right away the difference was huge (this was a few months ago.) I'm confident in the fact that a 2x12 Orange cab will be close enough to what I'm going for. A 4x12 is too big for our limited space. (We are doing this all out of a hobby, nothing professional, just joy haha) We will consider the 6505 or the 6505+ if a good deal comes up, but the 5150 head is being offered through a friend ridiculously cheap, so we probably will go with that.

Burningbridges, I am a little unclear as to where you suggested to place the mic. Is there a picture you could link that shows this?

So would a 12'x15' room in a basement with carpet on the floor work for placing the cab? I would be able to get my hands on a bunch of those blue "sound blankets" that they use on film shoots, I could hang these up on the walls as the walls are bare bricks/concrete.. There is a pool table in that room, would this be good for the sound to hit as you suggested like a couch,tv ? Would hanging blankets off of the pool table so that the sound isn't hitting the flat wood surface on the side be a good idea?

I've looked into Melodyne and apparently there's no support with Protools 10? So if I upgrade, I won't be able to use it.. Any thoughts, have they resolved the compatibility issues?

Thanks

See where it says "edge" ? Aim the microphone at that spot. That's a great starting point. When you are dialing in the tone, do not turn the mids down or attempt to "scoop" the tone. Dial in a great tone, and then turn the gain down just a tad. Less gain than you might think is ideal will send better recorded.

2x12 should work for your purposes. Is it an open backed cab? If so, experiment with micing the back of the cab as well. This is a great technique to add some low end and warmth to your tone. But if all else fails, focus on getting that front mic sounding as good as possible. The back mic would is secondary.

As for your room and hanging the blankets on the walls, that all sounds fine. Try not to place the cab right against a wall if possible. If you can place it about a foot away that would be preferable. Also try setting the cab on a chair and getting it off the floor. If that's not possible, than told it on its side so that the two speakers are top to bottom, and then mic the top speaker. Remember, the goal of all of this is to reduce the mud in the recording.

As for melodyne, I can't really help you there since I'm not familiar with it, or with pro tools. Sorry man :/

The cab isn't open backed. Apparently closed back is better for heavier stuff, like metal, according to a few music stores and online readings.

My DAW and everything is on the 2nd floor and as discussed the cab will probably go in the basement. (So 2 floors down).

Will having a speaker 1/4" cable that long (probably over 100' by the time it runs from the head to the cab from upstairs to downstairs) cause any issues? What about the mic xlr cables being that long?

Thanks for the quick replies and all the useful tips!
