I wouldn't call myself a musician and i am certainly not an academic, dropping out of high school, but I do like playing around with a little synthesizer set-up at home and do some rudimentary recording on my Korg D32XD - about which I might have a question or two in the near future. (That's how I stumbled upon the Homerecording forum in the first place, looking for answers...)

thanks. funny you should mention the vga screen. before, i used a korg d3200 and i only realised it had the vga board when i sold it and the buyer mentioned it. if any, i do some simple recording of a few tracks, and add some more later on, but i never come to the point of mixing the tracks to master tracks. (maybe once or twice.) so basically some old style cassette tape recording on a digital machine. i had sold my d32xd a year ago, thinking i'm not worthy, but i could not find the sound quality and logical interface on any other (cheaper or newer) alternative. so i went back to korg. first i fould a d3200, then a d16xd and a week or so later a d32xd. (i could really do with the 4 aux sends.) i had replaced the noisy cooling fan on my previous d32xd - and ordered to more of these fans to replace those of the d16xd and d32xd, only to find that the d16xd apparently has a different fan (5V instead of 12V) and the the one in the D32XD had already been replaced. badly. taking power from the hard drive connection (which apparently needed some adjusting) and not mounting the fan in its original metal part, which is now missing. i want to correct this (although i wouldn;t know where to find the metal part holding the fan, or the original connector) - but i need to know first, what pins the 2 wires should be connected to. but hey, sorry about this post.....it's the new members welcome, not the help me with a technical issue thread. i got carried away.

Grannies and eggs aside. getting a clean 5V (a few 100mA?) from a 12V supply is beer into water.

I did a few things to my D16XD.

3 - Fitted a 25 pin D connector, and brought the screen signals out to it. I understand how it works, but never actually connected anything to it.

that sounds very promising to me. i have a perfect D16XD standing around here and if I can take out the cooling fan with no harm done, I could use the little connector to the mainboard and the metal part that holds the fan, to replace the poorly built in fan of the D32XD with the proper one (picture) and mount and wire it like originally done.
are you sure the D16XD can do without the cooling fan?

I'm an electronics design engineer.
Very often the 'designers' stick a fan in things just to be safe, and have no idea whether it is necessary.
It sure is noisy though.
If you look inside the D16XD, you see an aliminium wall between the boards that might get warm, and the fan location.
The fan is located at the bottom of the case, where the coldest air is.
There is the switched mode PSU on that side (not too near), but it doesn't get red hot, and any heat it generates will not collect in the bottom of the case.
I made an executive decision to unplug my fan.
People on Studiotrax.net said "No No No, Plug it back in immediately".
Those people were not electronics design engineers.
Anyhow, I got the silence I wanted, and never had a problem with it after that.
The whole aluminium case of the DX16XD is heat sink, and it doesn't get very hot anyway.
When you flip the screen up, any heat can convect out of that hole.

thanks, i'm gonna give that a try then. take it out of the d16xd and use the parts to properly mount the alternative fan in the d32xd. (that fan, btw, is very quiet. i have used the same as a replacement in another d32xd.) i'll get to it tomorrow.

Hi everybody, I'm a 20 y.o. drummer, pianist, and singer. I joined because I want to learn more about recording from people who are more experienced than me. I like writing songs, and I hope to finish writing an album this summer and hopefully record it too.

Some of my musical inspirations are Shawn Mendes, Noah Kahan, 21 Pilots, Jeremy Zucker, Lizzy McAlpine, NF, Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, Forrest Frank, Harry Styles, & Gregory Alan Isakov.

I look forward to learning from you guys, this forum seems like a fun place where everyone is friendly and just trying to get better at their craft and enjoy music.

i don't know any of your musical inspirations, have heard of harry styles - who seems to me a would-be bowie ;-) but then again i am 65 and it must be great being a 20year old drummer piano player and singer. enjoy!!

My D16XD has the tube pre-amp fitted. All works fine.
I think the tube may work as a cold cathode.
I sketched out a circuit diagram for the module (somewhere).
Tap the signal path just before the converter, and the module could be used stand-alone.
I have a spare tube module.

you might have guessed by now, i know nothing about electronics. i had a d16xd with 8 input expansion and bought a d32xd with the tube expansion. that one suddenly stopped and went into standby, the 2nd day i used it. with a lot of noise from the speakers. after a while i started it up again. this happened again the next day. and in the end i got a psu failure message at start up. the fan in that d32xd had been replaced and got its power from the harddisk (a big one!) with some components added in between, one might be a capacitor. i removed that, replaced the cooling fan with one i know that would work, connected it as its originally meant to be connected. cut out the extra components and put in the 8 input expansion instead of the tube amp. it seems to work fine now. then i tried replacing the expansion and it worked fine but after 5 or 10 minutes, the sound on one of the channels was lost and now there's a lot of noise when i put the volume up. this might have started after it had warmed up, like after 5 or 10 minutes. also, i remember this occurred beffore, after i had had the first meltdown and the d32xd going to standby with a bang (from the speakers.) could it be something has been damaged when the machine suddenly stopped earlier on? like maybe a tube? it's a shame, i like that board and would prefer it over the 8 input board.

Hey I'm new here! My username is COOKI CHREME (like cookies and cream) I wouldn't call myself anything but a lover of music. I can feel the music emotionally and mentally it empowers me to become more creative through singing, dance, and even art. I love singing but everyone tells me I'm not very good at it or should have vocal lessons. I've tried everything (except paying for vocal lessons) but I recently started singing online and people have told me I'm very good at singing and even voted me very highly in a karaoke game. I'm so confused! I don't even have a good mic, auto tune, filters, or anything, I just sing. Please tell me what this could be.

i am sorry, i keep forgetting this is not the right thread for these posts. my bad. anyway - i took the korg apart yesterday and re-assembled it. then it worked. this morning no problems, everything worked well, including tube expansion. so.... thanks.

New/old member - used to hang here 20 odd years ago when Dragon ran the place.

Retired awhile back and built up a mostly ITB studio to play around in.

I used to spend tons of money on guitars, but these days it’s VSTs - mostly pianos, orchestras, and fretless basses.
