New House

We are working on an offer on the house and will probably be going forward with it so this is probably an official project now.

I think I have worked out some of the easier things. The first step before we do anything is going to get the windows replaced. They are currently the cheap/generic windows. I will need to find something a little more stout. Currently when standing in the basement you can hear the neighbor weed eating. Does anyone know of a company that makes good windows for that type of application (I’m sure a couple of searches will find something but I haven’t had a chance to look yet)?

I am thinking about going with another room within a room concept. I should be able to find someone to make me an external solid core door for the size of a crawl space. Two of these back to back should take care of the crawl space and still allow access. Maybe the same idea in front of the windows as well. I’ll need to talk to a contractor to see what I can do about the sump pump and water pipes. The sump pump is a pretty goofy location under the stairwell. It would be easy to sound proof except that I’m sure it has to be accessible.

I’ll probably just box in the A/C ducts and then build another ceiling a couple of inches under that. This will kill my ceiling height but I need more of a practice room then a recording studio anyway. Hopefully I’ll be able to double up the sheet rock on everything. The contractor that helped me for my current room wouldn’t put two layers of sheet rock on the ceiling as he was worried about the weight from the floor above.

So I've been doing my home work and it turns out the board product I was enthused about turns out to not be so beneficial.
I saw this stuff a while ago and the idea of acoustic isolation and recording had been cooking in my mind. Consider that thread a jumping in point. Often people are more willing to help you if they get to correct you than if you ask a question nicely, it seems no response may ever be offered. I am not pesimistic, people need to have thick skin. And, you get nowhere if you never leave the safety zone.
I would never have guessed the strong qualities of drywall. Very interesting research.

What do you mean by "if they get to correct you", as if people who give GENUINE advice here sit around and wait for the opportunity to correct someone....give me a break. The fact is, lots of people who THINK they know this stuff give incorrect advice here all the time. IF someone doesn't correct them, then "net fact" becomes the basis for wasting peoples time and money. If it weren't for the people that DO KNOW, everyone here would still be using eggcrates for treatment, and blankets for isolation.

Thats because people who DO know the answers get tired of writing the same damn information a thousand times, when all it would take usually is a simple search. Thats why I SCREAMED for some sticky threads a week ago. What did "I" get? ZERO...ZILCH..NOTHING...thats why!! Look at my post count. For the most part, THOSE posts were replys to peoples request for the SAME information. OVER 2000 posts....what the fuck more can a person do for FREE

Fitz, the recommendation to studio tips was A+, thank you.
You're welcome. Lots to learn there. Heed the warning sign at the entrance to the rabbit hole..."Enter at your own risk".. :D
