Hi :) Newbie here~ I ran across this site and HAD to join as it seems I could learn alot here. I am a vocalist with a dream....ya'll know what those are I'm sure ;) A Dream to make it! :D Genre is country/pop.. and where I need help is MIXING and sound editing. I would really appreciate some reviews of the songs I have up at my site: http://www.funender.com/music/kimberly The first song was done in studio (but after being transferred from tape to my computer, it got a bit foggy)... second song was done using my cheap Acoustica program that I use at home to record..... using my uh...cheap radio shack special microphone...LOL I know there is a way to the second one sound better... places where the vocals can be brought down, etc., so any help would be wonderfulllllllllllllll :p Also feel free to critique away... I'm working on doing the second one over because I know I can do better (my own worst critic) and I'll never consider myself 'perfect'....coz the minute I do...thats the minute I stop trying to better myself :)

Looking forward to gettin to know ya'll and hearing some of your stuff as well! Thanks in advance and God Bless

Welcome aboard....

Here's an article that may give you some insight --> Mixing 101

A couple of points as well.... (slightly off-topic!)

While I can appreciate the DIY ethic, I'm not convinced that musicians can do everything themselves. It's about focus and not diverting your attention from tasks that get you closer to your dream.

You mention your dreams include making it as a vocalist - why in the world would you then also worry about mixing and recording? Those endeavours in themselves require a broad enough skill set that they're occupations in their own right!

If you're going to be a vocalist, you need to concentrate on the craft of singing. Period. Leave the engineering to others so that you can focus solely on your goals!

I don't say this to discourage you - just to point out that worrying about areas in the field that are unrelated to your goals will be counter-productive to your achieving your dreams!

but in a tite situation

I feel exactly what you are saying about not diverting your attention. But at the same time, $ is one of the greatest obstacles to all dreams. I can afford to record something at home. For instance, my dream is to "make it" as a hip hop performer/songwriter. However, paying for EVERY thing puts the dream that much further from coming to fruition.

hey i got a song you can sing on if you are interested

check out http://www.soundclick.com/gullyjewelz (and click on the music link)
i have another song getting ready to be posted up there called "u still wit me" which would be perfect for a singer . . . to sing on the hook
let me know if you are interested!!

You summed up EXACTLY what I was getting ready to reply with! LOL
Blue Bear, thanks for your warm welcomes and thoughts :) I hope that one day I will have the means to be able to have someone do the work for me, but as for now...I have to fin for myself and try to 'learn the ropes'...it's very challening (to say the least). I am, however, working with a songwriter and hopefully in the near future *we* will be able to record our stuff professionally. I can't wait to have the originals out

Gully, I'll check out the jewelzzzzz at the site you posted! :p

I hear ya - but I guess what made me comment was that you mentioned you wanted "better sounding recordings."

My immediate question was "why?" Concentrate on writing good songs and nailing the singing -- good sound shouldn't be what you're worried about at this point -- engineers will give you that later! Focus on your singing and songwriting skills instead!

Just like you wouldn't learn to be a mechanic if your goal is to be able to drive a car!!

;)

Hey Kim,..

I listened to "Break Down Here". I listened to lo-fi so I cant offer too many mix suggestions. The only glaring thing that I noticed was the vocal too far out front. Wayyyyy too far out front. IMO Also didnt like the effect and the vocal track. It made it sound too fake,..ya know what i mean?
Also,..you went off key alot. Well,..not alot,...but needs some work.
Keep tryin'.

Take er easy,...

Ty

Hi and thanks for your review/reply! :) Yes...that song needed work and I've been working on it ...lol The only affect I had on the vocals was a very small amount of echo ....maybe I'll try cutting that out all together. Off key...there were some spots....another thing I've fixed. The song will be up again soon and I'm proud and hopeful to say there is a great difference in quality. I've been practicing some new vocal techniques. :p Anyway, thanks again for your review and taking the time to reply here! Much appreciated~ ;)

God Bless! Hope everyone has a great Thursday

Finally!!!!

So many times do people get offended by even the slightest criticism of their work. I dont get that. In my opinion one of the hallmarks of a successfull musician is the ability to value all opinions,..bad or good,...with a smile.

You definitely have that Kim. The game is half won.

Much luck to ya,..you'll do fine.

Take 'er easy,...
