Need to configure echo in real time..

Okay, there must be an easy way of doing this.

I want to play my geetar and have it echo in diminishing sound levels and in tempo with my toon in real time i.e. as I play I can enable input monitoring okay, so thats not a problem so without complex copy pasting after a non echo recording, is there a Dxi/VST that can do this?Or any other technique?

Not quite sure what you're asking, but it sounds like you want to use delay. There's one bundled with Sonar (FxDelay).

Just set the delay in accordance with the BPM of the song. You might need a BPM to millisecond converter, since most delays are calibrated in ms. There's several free ones available (or you can actually to the calculations yourself - but I'm too lazy for that ).

Should just be able to use any kind of Delay plug-in... To figure out how to have it echo in tempo, just do a little math with the bpm (beats per minute) tempo of your tune.

1/bpm * 60000 will give you milliseconds per beat, so then if you want the echo every beat you just use that. If you want it every eighth note, half it, etc... You'll have to season the decay/feedback to taste to get the sound to diminish as much as you want.

Thanks Dachay but I would like to echo a phrase four or five times, not just once. With delay, doesn't it just delay the one channel (left or right) by the set amount, once only? And not diminishing in loudness either?

So I would expect to tell the puter, delay "this sound" by x milliseconds, diminish loudness each time by x decibels and repeat x amount of times.

Like a wem copy cat of the sixties.

Sounds like you've been using some MIDI delays, which behave like how you're saying, where you can specify the number of times the note repeats. With audio delays, it's more of a turn some knobs until it sounds good kinda thing, at least as far as I know, to get it to trail off how you want it.

Actually the FxDelay allows up to 4 delays. Depending on what you're doing, that might be enough. I believe there is also a gain setting on each delay that should allow you to create the "dying" effect you want.

The only limitation on it is that the max delay allowable is 720 ms.

If that's not enough, the Waves Supertap 6 has 6 delays and allows up to 1500 ms delays.

Hang on. The "4-delays" in FxDelay are four voices, each of which will echo at differing times.

You only need the FEEDBACK parameter for one of these voices. Feedback is the regeneration amount of the delayed audio. Turning it up will give you more echoes, turning it down gives you less.

If you are running Sonar 3 use the Ultrafunk plugs, not the Cakewalk delay => just sounds cleaner to me.

Qwerty is absolutely right. Feedback keeps the delay repeating. The amount of feedback determines how quickly it will die out.

You only need a single delay, set to the appropriate beat (quarter note, eighth note, etc.). Use the tool I gave you the link for above.

I have more money than sense I have the Waves Gold bundle but only really use the Renaisence Reverb, Compresser and Eq. Never looked at the other tools

Anyway, I have now achieved 50% of what I wanted as I can apply it as an effect after I have recorded. I now need to hear it in real time, as I play. Any suggestions?

With Input Monitoring enabled, why wouldn't you be able to hear it in real time? To my knowledge, Input Monitoring is not effect specific (like FX automation, for ex). So it should work with any patched plug-in, no?

I ask, since with my 400 ms latency, I can only fantasize about what Input Monitoring is all about.

OK, I give up. How could you have an effect on something that is NOT playing? A delay on silence seems to be a wee bit difficult to achieve, no?

Not when you are playing. The fact that you aren't recording shouldn't matter.

For example, when I play my geetar with the Amplitube VST, and arm the track, I want to hear the effect that I'm using before I commit to record. Same as my levels, I want to hear the sound so I can correct the loudness levels.

There is something wrong with my transport/audio engine...it keeps sticking. When I load up a sample on a synth, I have to hit the play/record buttons several times to "unlock" the system, otherwise, nothing plays.

Sometimes, Amplitube plays in real time with the track armed, and sometimes, I have to hit the record button for it to sound. Weird

I'm thinking of upgrading to Sonar 3 studio very soon
