alright so im workin on stuff on my own here by doing drums and bass on Fruity Loops, but for the guitars which i need to sound pretty good to make up for fake drums and bass, im having a rough time.

My gear is:
Head - Peavey JSX
Cab - Genz Benz 4x12
Shure sm57

As a disclaimer i dont yet have a mic stand, ha so ive been improvising and i know this may be part of the problem but i am still puting the mic were i believe it should be. So basically ive tried alot of different things and cant seem to get a clear sound, ive tried lots of the basic things like turning gain way down and mids and high up and such but i cant get a warm, clear, sound that im looking for when its recorded herse an example.

How far is your microphone placed from the speaker? Is it angled? What kid of pre-amp are you using?

That is how I record my guitars. However, if you are only using one microphone, place one so that it looks like the angled one in the above picture. You will pick up more of the body that way and it'll sound a bit warmer hopefully. Play around with your settings a little more too after you try this mic placement. And really its all a matter of taste, if it sounds good to you then thats how it should sound. Don't get discouraged.

And yes, please get a mic stand :)

Try a little EQ cutting around 250HZ and boost between 3K and 5K.
