Okay, so here's my recording gear at the moment:

-Cubase LE
-CAD 7-mic drum mic set
-Presonus Firepod Firewire 8-Channel Audio Interface
-Kustom Quad JR 100 Amp

I mic the guitars about 3 feet away from the speaker, which makes it sound sweet. I mic the drums good and with the overheads about three feet above the cymbals.

I mix it all down, and it sounds kinda mushy, but i cant figure out how. I use compression, i mess with the EQ, but it still never sounds how i want to it to.

please listen to my latest work and tell me how i might improve my recording skills, thanks SOO much

myspace.com/positiveoh listen to "Hakuna Matata", haha.

The reason for the "mushy" sound is probably your room's reverb. This is especially noticeable when miking from further away like you're doing.

Your gear is fine. What would help the most would be room treatment. 4, 4" thick bass traps in each corner, and some absorber panels/diffusors on the walls. This will help absorb room reflections and will make the biggest difference in sound, in my opinion. When my friend treated his room with absorbers, it made the difference between home recording and "studio recording". I think he went a little overboard though because his room has almost no reflections at all now.

Anyway, there's a lot of discussion on room treatment in this forum:

And a good place to buy acoustic panels:

Definitely read a little before you buy though...
