Need help identifying a part on a Reel to Reel

I don't need to know the specific part, I'm just not sure what the part is generally referred to as. It is the shaft you place the reel of tape onto on the deck.

If i'm not being clear enough, I can provide a picture.
 
I'm assuming you're talking about the spindle...? If it's not a NAB spindle, it's probably a Cine spindle (about 1/4", three 'fins' around it, etc.).

A.k.a. "The very top of the motor."

It's often also referred to as the "hub", particularly in it's larger NAB version.
 
Hmmmm...ish.

Where it gets complicated is when you have a "cine spindle" on your tape machine...but then have an NAB hub adaptor more or less permanently sitting there.

I agree that it's properly called the spindle but have heard it (incorrectly) called the "hub" many a time, hence the phrasing of my answer.
