Hey guys, I could use some big time help. My issue has two parts

Now don't laugh. I have a Wollensak 1515-4 open reel tape recorder, a Wollensak 1580 open reel tape recorder, and a Concord 994 tape recorder.

They are absolutely mint on the outside and I would like to have a knowledgeable person work the belts, tubes, etc. Problem is, I have been to about twenty of the tech services using the internet as my source of info. It's always the same, we don't work those anymore. Does anyone know of anyone who might be able to help me. Maybe a mom and pop place that has been around for a while who does work on units like mine?

My second problem is the power cables to these units - way too short. I found power cables that are 15 feet in length but I do not know if they would be safe to use with the three units mentioned above. Aside from the ports for each unit, what are the factors for compatibility? Watts of the unit? Ohms of the unit? Some sort of tolerance? I know nothing about electricity - can anyone help with this?

Thanks all

Mike

The first thing I would do is order and change belts, oil the motors, clean/demag the heads, clean the tape path, etc.

A set of these is usually all that's needed to change belts:

Once that basic maintenance is done, look for a stereo repair place vs. a music store. You may have better luck.

Thanks for the advice.... I do appreciate it. Unfortunately, I do not have the expertise to do the work. That is why I am searching for someone to do the work so I can enjoy my 3 reel to reels before I leave this world (I am 72 with a heart condition).

The length of mains cables is almost unimportant. In real terms, the cross section of the cores sets the maximum current they can handle. In an audio recorder, current requirements are really low, so the choice of length is not down to electrical considerations, just practical ones - if they are too long, they need the surplus keeping tidy, but long cables lay flat while short ones often aren't long enough to do this. Nowadays, we use those 4 way blocks to allow easier connections, local to the items. If it's all done with decent cabling, it's fine. Watch out for cheaper cables that are stiffer, and cables that are visually damaged. It's not normally a safety consideration.

Thanks so much ..... "this" is what I ordered. Please let me know what you think .....

Polarized AC Power Cord for Denon RCD-M37 RCD-M38 RCD-M39 RCD-N7 CD Receiver - 15 FT

  • Make sure this fits by entering your model number.
  • UL Listed 2 prong AC 18AWG extension polarized power cord replacement
  • Figure D polarized power cable, rated to carry: 10A,7A 125V; 2-prong NEMA 5-15P male plug to female D connector 15FT long extension power cord.
  • 390 slot 10A / 7A 125V polarized power cable
If the hook up is compatible I was going to use these on my Wollensaks and my Concord. The seller notes that this is good for the Denon shelf stereo I have RCD - M38.....

Your thoughts please.........

Mike
