My studio construction thread

Hey strat..are your walls intended as ISOLATION walls?

Rick--nope, I have the luxury of living out in the middle of nowhere, so I'm not concerned with isolation. Whew!! Glad I don't have to make it quiet--just gotta focus on making it sound decent.

Not sure if you mentioned it anywhere...
...is this mainly going to be a studio for your own use...or were you planning on doing outside work also?

Let's put it this way: the design and layout is purely selfish--it's how I want/need it to be when I'm being a one man operation. But in the past 3 years I've produced 4 fairly big projects for other artists--so yeah, it's reasonable to figure there will be more.

I love doing those other projects--I'm just not willing to build around their needs. The 5 year plan is a standalone studio building, so maybe I'll be more accommodating then.

Yeah...I totally get what you mean.

I also have a "standalone building" plan...or more like an adjoining building.
I just keep weighing out the costs/effort VS the return.

Purely from a project perspective, it's great working with other musicians, but from a business perspective it's not too promising...more like a labor of love than a business in many cases. :)
I mean...having your own space still gives you lots of creative possibilities without the headaches of a more commercial studio setting.
But…I would still like to go with a bigger studio...one day.

Anyway...your current space looks like it's a good enough size to do more than just solo stuff...so you have both options.

Some important details coming together. Notice three things in the following pic: 1) The wall is finished--no more mud & tape, now nice & painted; 2) Where there once was a blue snake cable coming out of the wall, there is now a 16 channel panel (there'll be one of those on each wall); 3) There's a working outlet! Okay, there's actually seven of them. Man it's nice not to be running everything off an extension cord running through the door.
Is that a soft gold paint you used Strat? I like the warmth it projects.

Having those channel panels on your walls is a great idea Strat..makes everything more accesible while being easy on the eyes.

7 outlets..good planning!

Looking foward to seeing the overall studio, of what you've finished so far.

Wow, that looks great! You're slowly knocking out all the similarities between our 2 studios... I'll get there someday, my son's only 6 tho so it might be another 15-ish years before I can get him to build mine :D The xlr jacks in the wall are awesome! Why exactly did you want to raise the floor around your desk?

Thanks 'sup! Hey--my son's only 19, could be closer than you think!

The raised floor is my final salvo in the battle against wires. Electrical, speaker, MIDI--and tons of mic cables--they all end up in the desk somewhere, right? Well, with those wall panels, everything can now plug in on a wall and not the desk. But the snake cables from the wall panels gotta get to the desk somehow. So they go through the walls, forward in the room, then under that elevated floor and will come out under the desk--never to be seen!

In this pic (https://homerecording.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=3412336&postcount=21) you can see the wires coming out into the recessed space in the elevated floor. The desk will take up that whole recessed space.

If I were above grade, I'd have run 'em under the floor across the whole room, but I didn't feel like busting up concrete for 'em.

Very cool sir. ;)
Looks to be comin along nicely. Good game plan on cabling and outlets too. Mine's one of those "organized chaos" kind of rooms. :)
I like yours better.
Ya wanna do mine when yer done?

:laughings:

Keep up da pics boss! Lookin good.

Do I wanna do yours when I'm done? Hmm...lemme consult the judges.

/long awkward pause/

No.

:p

Ahh...pure tedium. More of the same. Finished soldering and installing the second panel. This one's on the back wall. Inputs are for drums and various percussive doo-hickeys' mics. The outputs are for drummer's headphone monitor mix, and a couple of wedge monitors for when I'm using the room as a live jam room.

First pic is that panel for the rear drum wall. Second and third pics show the tedium in detail. First the snake as it's coming out of the wall, then the snake all stripped and prepped for soldering into the panel. That's the third and final panel--I'll finish it tomorrow if I'm lucky.

For all of the fashionistas in the room...the camera and its flash always does weird things with color. I know your just dying to know, so I'll put the issue to rest--the last pic in that last post is a pretty decent representation of the wall color. A goldish-tannish hue, if you will.

Of course that judgement is based on my monitors. I'll have to you send you my monitors' color profile, and you'll have to re-calibrate yours to accurately appreciate the awesomeness of my color selection.

Hey Treel. I see you reading my thread.

Who knows if he/she'll see this...but I always wanted to do that to someone.

Can't wait to see the finished project! I've been wanting to do something like this for awhile, but it's too easy to be lazy and just keep using the same old set-up. I admire your commitment.

Wow...it's been a month and ten days since the last post in this thread. I thought I'd be done by now, but life has a tendency to get in the way--but it's all good. And there's been progress. Here are some updated pics.

First pic is the mixing end of the room. The computer is on a makeshift desk up on the elevated floor section. That stool is sitting in the cutout where the real desk will be built.

The second pic is a side wall. It shows off some custom shelving I built. You see the GIK acoustic panels with my work between them. I built mic shelves the same height and depth as the acoustic panels. When finished, the room will have bookshelves, and corners shelves that coordinate with these mic shelves.

The third pic is the back end of the room, where the drums will go.

The fourth pic shows what it looks like with a little color on the floor. I'm painting the floor tonight--catching a bit of a buzz from the fumes too. FYI--the studio is in the basement, and thus part of a much larger finishing project. As such, I didn't want to do anything permanent with the floors. Next summer we'll be building out the whole basement in a similar design theme to this studio. When we do, I'll do all the floors contiguously, including the studio. It'll likely be tile, but I didn't want to do something in my studio until I was ready to do it all. So I'm painting the floor and topping it off with area rugs (already purchased--this floor color goes well with them).

the colors and shades ( lights setting i guess ) looks very peaceful , perfect for a ideal studio :p

Someday hopefully , i will have something like this :drunk:

I thought I'd be done by now, but life has a tendency to get in the way-
I think I'll make that my signature.:D

Hey strat, man that looks great! I love the symetrical look and the colors. Very very nice dude! The mic cab's are perfect too. Can't wait to see your console when its done.
fitZ:)

Looks great! Is that concrete stain on the floor in the last picture? I'd love to do that in my basement studio, but its gonna take a lot of work to get the old paint/tile adhesive off my current floor. Also, is there anything (treatment wise) above your acoustic tile ceiling? Will ac tile absorb down low enough to not create a problem? :)
