Thanks for all the generous help for finding a mic. The ADK Hamburg is a major upgrade from my SM57 for vocals... the only problem was that it was so sensitive that I had a hard time getting a good sound in my small bedroom.

Fortunately I managed to get a decently dry vocal putting the mic in my closet and having the singer sing into the closet, then put 2 old bed mattresses around him... ghetto!

If you want to hear a clip of the ADK in action, here's the first song I produced with my friend Jet (his originals) using the ADK.

(1 min snippet, hawaiian/reggae style)

While I'm here, any mixing suggestions are very welcome. It was hard getting used to the different sound of the mic since I was so used to using the SM57 which required a lot of EQ'ng and stuff...

Thanks!

damn man, that shit sounded great... so was the mixing.. what preamp are you using?

AYY HAWAIIAN!

Where are you guys recording? Sounds very Mountain Apple to this local haole. I know you are in a bedroom but that means you are doing things right I guess. Great job and congrats on the mic.

Thanks for listening...

Diffusion, I'm using a Studio Projects VTB1 preamp.

jake, I stay in Hilo.. where you stay? :D Nice to see some hawaii ppl here... thanks for the comments. Yeah, mountain apple makes some good local music. :)

junplugged, I'm using a reverb called "Ambience" - it was a free one I think, along with a couple compressors, a little chorus, and some delay.

your using a VTB-1? WTF? thats what Im using and my recordings sound like straight ASS compared to yours.. :D I honestly thought it was like at least a RNP or Grace 101...
Yeah, you did a real nice job, especially with what limited equipment you had...

looks like i'll pull that pre out for another test...i was thinking of selling it

That is a very impressive recording! It's actually hard to believe it was done the way you say, so that says a lot for your talent. Keep up the good work!

holy crap was that a good sounding clip. I'm not really into reggea or however you spell it, but that sounded great! I've been thinking of getting a piar of hamburgs, I think I definitely will now!

Hey man...congrats in having the creativity of implementing some trully ghettp shit and getting away with what for me sounds smooth and rock solid! It sounds like it belongs on a CD store next to all them reggae artist! fo sure!

Are you pau with the racism brah? Is it ok if I start talking about all the ******s,spics, and ragheads here in California? Is that your aloha spirit? I've spent a lot of time in the islands, used to live in Kaaawa, and I thought that shit was going away. We're all just people, and even kama ainas descended from people who came from somewhere else. Your racism is no different from the F'd up sheet wearing Klu Klux Klan in the deep south. See it for what it is and get over it.....and most of all, don't bring it here to this international audio community.

Robert, I really don't think jake meant anything racist.

He said that he's a local "haole" himself before he posted that... I'm filipino and I make jokes about filipinos all the time. I'm sure he wasn't saying anything serious!

and thanks for all the positive comments!

DJRubio - I expect you're right, that the remark wasn't as hostile as I took it, though racist remarks are often made lightly, and still cut deeply. I have been on the receiving end of some not so friendly haole bashing, a couple of times getting to the shoving and "F-you haole" stage, for no other reason than being one in the wrong place at the wrong time. So this is a sore spot with me, and my rant was in that context. "Kill a haole day" was not very funny to the haoles at school in the islands.

BTW - nice recording! I always love it when someone shows that skill and talent trump gear and facilities.

Jake - Peace brah, the waves belong to all of us.

Nice sounding recording.

btw-what the hell is a haole?
Thanks!

A haole is what a lot of locals in Hawaii call people who are white... It can be offensive if used in the wrong way.

Robert, I understand where you are coming from. I hate it when locals here do that. :(

It's like nigga, spic, and the rest...white trash and shit...used on the wrong people at the wrong time it means chaos...

Me im a S P I C a Spanish Person In Control!!! for all i care words are just words...somebody comes with the racist stuff around were i live all the time... from this fuck..ing spics to me being a gentlemen and opening doors for ladies and them just giving me looks and opening the other doors..

All in all...words are sound frequencies that are faded in space! They won't kill me or not let me be whoever i am or keep me from being were i want to be!

I just pitty people that are racist.....in the words of Bobby Marley " ONE LOVE " that's all we need =)

LOL...

It's pronounced like ha-o-lay if you say it fast, but the "lay" is said very short and fast.. more like "le".

I don't consider "haole" the same thing as something like "******". The term is used a lot by here just to simply describe someone who is white. Someone might ask, "what did he look like?", and it's perfectly acceptable to say, "oh, he was a haole guy".

And how did this thread turn from ADK Mic to Haoles? :P
