i order 2 mxl 603s (the should arrive in the next days) & im just a bit courios, how different the 2 mxl603-mics sound. i don't had the possibility to order a matched pair. this mics are "cheap chinese mics", who have a few mxl603 & can tell me, how different they sound from each & each other?
have someone compare them with km84?
i read also about the mxl600, a caroid (603 is a wide caroid), how different is the sound?
a friend of mine would like to use 2 condensers as overheads for his percussionset & wanna use the mics also live, so a wide caroid is mabye not focused enough.

I would think that you would want drum overhead mics to be less focused. I'm using two 603s to record my drums, and if you fiddle around with the placement they are all you need to pick up good cymbals and hi-hat (and snare, though I mic that too). I haven't compared the two to each other extensively, nor have I ever owned or used expensive condenser mics. I just know that I like these ones.

I've read and heard through the grapevine that the mxl600 sounds like muck. The 603s seems to get pretty good reviews on the bbs, though. I have 2 and like mine.

Harvey says that they sound so identical to the mc012 cardioid that you can hardly tell the difference. If this is true it would be an incredible bargain, as you know, I love my mc012's.
BTW welcome to this board...

da sind wir also wieder :)
i got the package a view hours ago testet my mxl603 them with guitar, vocal & shaker.
i compare them with my earthworks sr77 & my tlm103.
the funny thing is, that on paper the 603 looks like a "pushed" mics with lot highs, but its more a "midrange" mic. for voice, the sound is natural, warm & round, the tlm103 has much more high & deep low, a more sonor sound.
when i pushed the highs of the mxl's, i get still a round sound.
guitar was also a warm & round sound, the earthworks is much more direct & brighter, the 603 bigger.
on shaker, the earthworks is unbelievable 'cause its such a fast mic, the 603 sounds more "vintage".
the differents between the 2 mxl's are absolutely minimal, it was not possible to say, witch mic is witch.
a percussionplayer will come to my place now, he buy 2 beyerdynamic opus53, electret small condenser.
we will check the earthworks, the beyerdynamic & the mxl with a view istruments.

Monty,
why don't you post some samples of your recordings you make in order to compare the mics, so we all can hear the difference?

Cheers
