Should I do it! The place I called has one left that's new in the box. Is this a good price based on what they originally sold for given that they are discontinued now.

Thanks,

It sounds as good as a $2500 microphone, get it while you still can, this is the best mic MXL has made.

Sweet guys, thanks!

Did this mic come with an 12AT7 or a 12AX7? Will I need to replace the tube ASAP or is she good to go out of the box?

the tube is not socketed, so it's a bit of a pain to swap out (requires soldering).

that said, i like mine plenty fine with the stock tube.....

cheers,

I BOUGHT IT!

It was the last one that Shreve Audio had, was open box and I got it for $250...should be here Friday.

Regarding installing a socket for tube changes, I wonder who I should bring it to and what I should expect to pay. I have soldered pots on my strat, but I'm a bit concerned about soldering in a socket on a mic. Should I bring it to my local amp tech guru?

Thanks Phil and KidVybes for sticking with my endless questions. So, my "full" mic locker is: MXL V77, CAD M179, and Groove Tubes GT55 (which may go up for sale if the other two are smokin')

Hi Han,

Have you tried the V6 yet? I heard some different recordings that used it and was very impressed. The marketing behind it is goofy, but who cares if its great.

Are you sure? My V77S tube is socketed, my first V69M had a tube soldered to the PCB, my second V69M has a tube in a socket, just like the V77S.

Hi, I haven't been able to try it, but I will as soon as possible.
I've just come from the studio, been experimenting with mics on upright bass. I'll start a thread about it later this evening.

Cheers, Han

I just scored one as well from a ebay seller, who had it in his stock, i purchased a couple of mics from him and just happen to ask if he had a v77. :D Got mine for $250 brand new in the box. Just to clarify, are there two versions, v77 and v77s? If so what are the differences between them, does one sound better than the other.
:)

hmmmm....well, mine is most definitely not socketed. :D maybe they're from different production runs?

FWIW, if you go to this thread https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=177858 and scroll down to the pics that Kidvybes posted, mine looks like the bottom one in pics 02b and 04a.

socketed or not, i love the sound of this mic. Han, did you ever try it outside kick? if not, i'm going to have some time to record drums this weekend, and i'll give you my thoughts once i have.

cheers,

They all look like they're socketed until you try to take the tube out and find the solder, had to mod mine as well

..you are correct sir!...they do appear socketed until you try to remove the tube...wiring is tightly crimped to the tube's pins...it's near impossible to remove the tube without replacing the tube mount (with a better 9-pin socket that allows for easy swapping of tubes)...here's the link to the socket:
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=055-500
...relatively easy to install...
...here's the V77 with socket replacement (top) including a NOS GE Cryo 6072A tube, and with stock mount (bottom)...there's plenty of room for the conversion...tube fitment in the new socket is so secure that no additional bracing/support is necessary...
https://homerecording.com/bbs/attachment.php?attachmentid=23137
...by the way, I had a friend of mine who sells vintage tubes test the OEM tube that came with the V77 and it tested very well for a Chinese tube...extremely low microphonics (very important in a microphone application...signifies low noise) and near perfectly matched triodes (not important since the V77 only utilizes one of the 2 triodes)...but a good NOS 6072 or 6072a (or even a good black plate GE 5751) will improve the sonic character of the mic (IMHO)...(sonic) beauty is in the eye (ear) of the beholder...

how did the NOS 6072 tube change the sound? I put a 12at7 in my mxl v77 and it tamed the sizzle, but i want to try a higher quality 6072 (original tube type of the v77) instead.

sizzle? my V77's got the original 6072 tube in it......and the last thing i'd call it would be "sizzly". mine is very smooth sounding. interesting.

Mine sounded good before but I like to try out different tubes. I threw in a Black Plate and it made a bit of an improvement to my ears.

what are the differences in the 77 and 76? and why in the hell did marshall electronics stop making the 77 seeing that it's so well liked?

Supposedly they had a falling out with the company that manufactures their microphones and they switched manufactures. The factory is the same one that now makes the Studio Projects mics.
