Maybe its just me, but this microphone sounds drastically different(better) through different preamps. I had stopped using this mic for awhile. When I first bought it I would use it through my vlz pro or my dmp3 and I noticed it sound a little better through the dmp3. I recently got a groove tubes brick and noticed it sounded smoother annd round.(I know the brick is a tube pre so it will add color to the sound.) A friend of mine has a VoxBox and we were comparing how some of the cheaper mics sounded through the dmp3 and the VoxBox. In my opinion none of the other mics that we tried had such a huge difference in the quality as the v67.(Other mics we tested: MXL 2003, Cad 2400, Cad M37, GT55, GT66, MXL 990, Rode NT1, and AT4033 [I know this doesn't qualify as a cheap condensor]).
Has anyone noticed the difference in the sound with this mic in different preamps.

all mics sound different through different pres

I know that mics sound different through different preamps. What I'm trying to say is that I've rarely heard a mic with such a huge difference through different preamps.

try an SM57 sometime. you want a mic that takes on the character of the preamp, that one's a weeeener for that.

you're talking about a lot of variables. so many, that anyone else may never get the same results as you even with the same gear. there's even variables in gear that is the same make and model. but it is possible that some mics respond better than others in the chain, but it dosn't mean my v67 will do that, or that i'll hear it. i have those pres too. i don't do testing like that anymore tho, it takes too much time and effort so i just record and try different setups and rarely is any of them bad. everything is usable for me most of the time.

Good to know, countrylac

I know that a lot of people dismiss comparisons in general, and the majority of the time I think they have a valid point. If you tried the DMP3 and the other pres at the same location through the same remaining signal chain, I think your basic observation is valid, though. As, you said, you didn't notice that big of a difference using the same setups with the other mics. Maybe this observation about the 67 has already been noted (I don't know), but I think it's still good that you point it out. I have a 67 that, if I were currently set up to be recording again (my stuff's in storage right now), I would be looking to replace it immediately if not sooner. I can't stand that bugger. On the other hand, all I've heard it through is my Behringer mixer, so I guess I'll wait until I've got a better pre with which to judge it before I bail on it. I may still hate it then, but at least I'll know. I don't imagine I'll be getting a VoxBox anytime soon, though (like before I'm dead). :(

Thanks.
