The 990 is a good cheap LDC mic for all around recording . GOOD CHINA CHEAPIE! MUSICIANS FRIEND HAS THEM FOR $69.99 with shockmount and case. Sometimes they run sales and sell them for $59.99 that's cheaper than E-BAY.

Don´t buy it!!!, I have one and didn´t like it at all. Use your money in other options that are better than this.

The 990 is a SDC in what looks like a LDC body. In many respects (capsule size etc) it is similar to the MXL 603 which generally gets better reviews. The 992 is pretty expensive as far as MXL non-tube LDCs go and apparently is a special to only Musicians Friend. There is no data on it at the MXL website and this is a preview of an article in EQ magazine that I found online
Byline: Mitch Gallagher

The latest in the MXL is the 992 (available exclusively from Musician's Friend), a large-diaphragm, solid-state condenser mic.

The 992 offers a lot to be pleased with. It's physically a big, beefy mic with a cardioid polar pattern and FET electronics. There's a 150Hz lowcut filter (too high for my taste, but effective nonetheless) and a 10dB pad. The mic offers ruler-flat response to 3kHz, then there's a rise to +6dB at 8kHz and a fall to -3dB at 20kHz. This peak helps with clarity and presence, but it sidesteps added harshness. The 992 can handle up to 130dB SPL without the pad, and has a signal-to-noise ratio of 80dB (A-weighted). All internal wiring is Mogami.
Sounds OK but there are a lot of reasonably good LDCs in the $200 range.

I went to buy a 990 simply to get the shockmount for my TLM-103. But when I found how cheap they were I bought a pair.
I tried them on voice and hated them.... thought I'd wasted my money, but then I found out they are actually a small diaphram and tried them as drum overheads and they sounded great, so I'm quite happy.

The 990 and 991 are supposed to be the same mic in different housings. and they are apparently a reissue of the popular 603s.

I know of a pro who uses a pair quite a lot for classical recordings. Mainly on strings and grand piano. He says he finds them to be quite smooth and neutral and have a very low self noise.

YMMV

Both the Marshall MXL991 and MXL993 are available exclusively from Musician's Friend.

Both the Marshall MXL990 and MXL603S have a 20mm gold-sputtered, 6 micron gold diaphragm, with the difference being the housing etc, and I’m not sure about electronics and etc.

I’m pretty sure the Marshall MXL991 and the MXL603S are the same microphone… both have a 20mm gold-sputtered, 6 micron gold diaphragm.

The Marshall MXL993 has a similar deign to the MXL603S but is different, so even if the MXL993 has the same 20mm gold-sputtered, 6 micron gold diaphragm as the MXL603S its going to sound different because of deign… but they might sound pretty close, or not.

MXL990 is a 20 mm. gold-sputtered, 6-micron diaphragm
MXL991 is a 20mm gold-sputtered, 6 micron gold diaphragm
MXL992 is a ?mm large capsule, gold sputtered diaphragm
MXL603S is a 20mm gold-sputtered, 6 micron gold diaphragm
MXL993 is a ?mm gold diaphragm capsule design

The Marshall MXL993 looks interesting.
