im looking at shreveaudio.com, looking for 603s but saw 600's instead, are these the same mic or what? im looking to use them as overheads, and i wanna find a good price...

No direct experience but looking at the MXL site the 600 has a 3 micron thick head and a 'cardoid' pattern and the 603 has a 6 micron thick head and a 'wide cardoid' pattern.

so what exactly does the thickness of the micron and the size of the cardiod pattern hav to do with how the mics will sounds as overheads for rock drums???

just get the 603's, you havent heard people raving about the 600 have you? No. get 603s....... go!

Marshall MXL-600 $270 Veiled top end and exaggerated low-mid, compared to the Oktava MC-012. About 1 dB lower output than the Oktava. It just sounded very dull and lifeless. Very easy to bottom out as well.
Marshall MXL-603 $99 This was a flat-out winner, folks. Almost identical to the MC012 in sound, with a wide cardioid pattern, almost approaching omni. We used them as drum overhead mics, and they did a great job. The diaphragms are easy to bottom out on voice, but with a pop filter (and positioned above the singer's mouth), they wouldn't be bad as a vocal mic on some singers, and they'd probably do fine on acoustic guitar, and many other instruments. They were also a perfect match to the Oktava MC012 - they sounded nearly identical.

I bought an MXL 600 with a bunch of other mics. It was basically thrown in as part of the deal. I traded it in for an MXL 603, which I think sounds much better (the store couldn't understand why I wanted to give them a "better" mic!).
The MXL 600 has a dull, low-mid honk to it that I didn't like very much. The MXL 603 sounds much more open and detailed, something I really noticed on the ringing sound of guitar strings.
