i reckon the 2496 being 99 bucks is perfect.
lots of people like them.i'm waiting to hear from monseuir pop.
to resume helping him. wheres is he ??

Hopefully he'll be back, though he seemed pretty disenchanted. I can relate, I've been on the brink of it myself several times! Seems he could use a bit of help as far as basic computer functionality, which is probably what is currently holding him back. I'll more than happily fill in the gaps and offer explanations to the best of my abilities, as deficient as they currently are :o

2496 seems to carry a pretty good reputation. Kinda like the dmp3 and the spb1, for the money they can not be beat, this is a good thing for folks like me.

*final edit.. I promise* Well if he does not return, I was actually learning a bit I hadn't realized before.

Maybe he can't come back because he's out in a field with his pc like the last scene of that movie "Office Space"? Hope not. I was going to post instructions for hooking up his MR-8 to his sound card like Manning asked me.
Pop, here's how I do it:

1. From the Stereo out, you need to hook a 1/4" "Y"- cable to the left and right outs. Make sure the other end is an 1/8" female connection. Then connect a standard double male 1/8" stereo cable to the "Y" and into the line-in (not the mic in) on your sound card and you're set. Manning will get you going on making sure you have n-track set up right, and you should be good to go. You will be able to record 1 track at a time mono, or even record stereo tracks this way. I've used it to transfer complete songs mixed on the mr8, but you can't really do anything with them when you do, so go with what Manning tells you to do.
I hope you come back and see this, and I hope everything works for you :)

cellar. oh well - i tried. its a pity if folks give up !
theres a whole world of recording to explore.
for yourself. hers a tip on vocals.
in n track duplicate your track. (i dont use n anymore...but i rememberr it well)...then right click on the duplicate track >>>properties>>>selected
wave file properties . notice offset box. try a figure of 0.01 or 0.02.
then close. this will thicken up a vocal trick by offsetting the duplicate a bit.
you can do same by enabling track dragging using the cross at the top.
also on the bottom bar ..you can zoom in by dragging left the bar where you see the cursor change to II.
if you want more N tricks just ask. peace cellar.

Sorry, I missed that email, didn't see you'd replied.

So that's how it's done! Can't wait to try it!

sorry, to hijack the thread, but im having waht sounds like the same problem, but instead of it not being there, it skips. Plays back ok on the mr-8, but I cant get it to work in any software. Did monsterpop figure it out?

skipps

sounds like you need to play with the buffer settings to get it to play through, his problem was the file looked incomplete, but if you grab the end of the file and drag it right, it will all be there, if your getting skips in the file and the wav file is ok should be buffer settings....which is also covered on the toutorial page i posted....

brad. if you post your pc confign in full i'll take a stab /make suggestions.
sounds like you might have something interfering with your pci slots.
tell me whats in your pci slots plse.

nothing, just a 56k modem (dont use) and a stock soundcard (dont use, except for playback.)

How much memory do you have? I had only 128Mb, and I was getting that skipping problem when I'd get to 20 tracks with 1 or 2 plug-in effects on them. I solved it by getting 512.

im running 512, transferning via usb, and only doing a stereo track. I just use this thing to record live shows.

Sorry, it's beyond my expertise. Manning will have to help... :o

brad. i need more detail on your pc.
are you saying - recording ONE stereo track on your pc causes a
problem ? via usb ?
what processor ? what drives ? how many drives ? OS ??
make of USB sound device ??
please detail exactly what you are doing when you get the problem please.
peace.
ps...VERY IMPORTANT. do you have DMA enabled brad on your HD's ????
also - please download diskbench from prorec.com and run on your drive so i can get an idea of performance stats. thanks.

recording

you see the thing is he inst even recording, he is transfering tracks from the mr8, and only playing one track even stereo shouldnt be a problem unless the buffer settings are incorrect....

dave. wow - one track ? should never happen. its a pc config issue.

playbaack buffers

here is a post with someone with a very similar problem, not exactly the same but pretty close, the consensis is amoung n track users that the buffer settings while not always the problem should be considered fisrt as they are the easyest and quickes way to find out

manning, I dont think you are familiar with the mr-8. When it transfers tracks via usb, it does not play back live and go into the computer. The mr-8 is a standalone multi-track unit. I record two channels on there, and hook up the usb port from the mr8 into my computer. When the mr-8 transfers, it dumps it all at once, leaving me with a stereo wav file. A 3 minute song takes about a minute to transfer. Now, everything plays ok, up until the same time on every track. It is not a playback issue, I think it is simply not making it into the computer. I have played it back in Windows media player, real player, musicmatch jukebox, n-tracks, and cubase. They all skip it at 2:38 seconds into the song, it just repeats, like a skipping cd. I DO NOT RECORD LIVE INTO MY COMPUTER.

brad. i NOW realise that. then its your usb implementation in your pc possibly not conforming to the usb in the mr8.
ie. the comms protocol between both devices.
question...what usb version is your pc on ?
ver 1 ? or 2 ?
and what usb version is your mr8 on ? ver 1 ? or 2 ?

I thought the MR8 was compatible with USB 1 & 2, but I may very well be (and probably am) wrong...

Is your card just whacked?

Do you have an external CF card reader ($20)?

If you have no external cf reader, you may want to try re-formatting the cf card.
