mr8 etc

hi folks. thanks a lot for all the replies.
i DO have the Wavmanager thing,,,,,but even if i make sure to do the"delete unused",,and erase any tracks i dont need,,i usually end up with loads more files/tracks than i expect to see when i open them us.
i also DO have a card reader,,,and thats the way ive been trying to do it before. i find it all very complicated and fiddly using the pc,,so thats why ive been" kinda defeating the purpose" by using as much time as i can on the MR8,,,then recpording what i have onto mini disc and then putting it back on teh MR8 and starting all over
ive also found that stuff does sort of fade away a wee bit,,and also get quite a lot of hiss sometimes too. im CRAP at anyting involving technology! jeez,,i cant even drive!

pop. the hard part is setting up the pc.
often the problem is the pc is a hand me down and not configured properly.
once configured it runs day after day like my pc's do.
once configured its just a question of hitting the red recording button.
what areas of the pc are giving you grief ?
i'll try and give you ideas if you give me feedback on your problems so as things run smoothly. peace.

manning,

I have a question. My Dell has an integrated soundchip. When I do finally replace it with a real soundcard, is there a way for the mobo to re-route around it so it's not wasting resources? It does devour a small amount of RAM, doesn't it?

I know my terminology is not correct, I hope you get the gist of it though.

cellardweller. you just disable the sound chip in windows or the bios.
it used to be more of a problem than now.
dell are very good machines for the bucks. not my first choice but good value, only gotchas are to watch the pci slots.
and disable another device like a network card in a pci slot prior to recording.
also 512 ram is mandatory with xp.
heres an example of how to do it wrong. on another part of this forum a guy is trying to run a full blown studio on 128 mb of ram. and he just wont listen to myself or others. and continues to have probs.
frankly the amd sempron is a nice little budget alternative with 512 ram.
drives are dirt cheap these days. a friend had a dell. i did some tweaks to it, now it works great. ITS ALL IN THE SET UP.peace.

going back the the original post, I am also having this problem. Kinda. I have used the mr-8 for about 2 years now, and it has worked perfectly, but just recently it started acting up.

I am using wav manager, but when I transfer all the tracks, and open them up, it skips after about 2:37 of music. It plays fine on the mr-8, but somehting gets screwed with the usb transfer. anyone have any ideas?

It does this on all of the tracks 1-8, all at the same time, even if i open them with windows media player, real player, and musicmatch jukebox.
I had that problem awhile back. I have discovered that if you record beyond 4:01 in real time, you can't bounce down the tracks. I have a 512mb card in my mr8 and still had a problem with it. I went back and deleted the unused tracks (the 2nd wave file the mr8 creates to enable the undo/redo function), and it cleared up. It's a pain in the ass, but if your tracks are good, there is no need to undo/redo, so before I bounce down, I delete them. It clears up room on the card. I usually download all my tracks to pc to mix, and leave only the basic tracks as a guide to record more tracks. I delete the unused tracks each time before I proceed. I am rambling, but I hope I solved your problem. Also, did you download the software updates from the Fostex site? That may have a little bit to do with it. Mine stopped skipping after I updated the second time....

hi mate
Well,,ive just TRIED to use the Wavmanager,,,and untick all but tracks 7 and 8 to import, But where have they gone,,and how do i open them up in N Tracks? I really have NO idea what im doing here man.i cant even imagine how to mix stuff down on NTracks,,,cos i dont understand what all the stuff does. its so much easier to do it within the MR8,,but everyone assures me that the pc is the way to go. i dont get it!

Don't worry about N, it's pretty easy to figure out, even for me! Be patient, give yourself some time and space, it'll all come together! errr... some of it will come together, as in my case...

Did you put 7/8 in the default file that wavmanager opened?
If so, open wavmanager again and try to detemine where that is...

manning- I've a "nodding acquaintance" with bios, but I don't recall seeing that option. Could've overlooked it quite easily, but I did plod around in there regularly for a while when/after installing my 2nd harddrive....

hi mate
no,,ive no idea where Wavmanager is puting stuff that im importing tpo the pc,,hence my trouble finidg it toload up on NTracks. i shall have another look now,,but there is no wayto find out stuff from the Wavmanager,,cos it tells you nothing!

pop. heres help !!
in windows....
START>>>>FIND>>>FILES OR FOLDERS
in search enter PRICESLY the following....
*.wav
in the containing text box.
then look at the RECENT DATE.
click on the speaker icon and the track will play in windows.
now transfer those tracks to a NEW FOLDER.
call it popssongfolder for example.
THEN in ntrack. open popssongfolder in a ntrack session and IMPORT
each wave file into A SEPERATE TRACK. peace.

mr8 etc

hey mate
I did the serach and there they were a lurking thanks for that.
I rther stupidly dont know how to save them to a new folder though. ive opened 7 and 8 in N TRakcs though,,,and dragged them all the wa yu to the end as instrucetd by Dave In Toledo i think. And yes,,,the entire tracks ARE there after all. Ive no idea what to do now though. jeez,,thi ssucks. im yet again tempted to just go back to doin it all in the wee red box.
thanks for the continued help by the way.
i guess i will NEVER get on top of this

heres how. easy way.
right click on your desktop. select NEW FOLDER.
click the name new folder and rename to popstracks.
in the search window that showed the wavs, right click on each - CUT.
in popstracks folder open it and right click PASTE.
repeact for each wave track.
in ntracks OPEN the pops tracks folder and for each track IMPORT.
n track will create a waveform for each track.
the click > (ie PLAY) in n track . tell me how you get on.
a NOTE...for each new song you do in n track ...before starting a song ,
create a unique folder name on you drive. eg..
first song ... popssongone
second....... popssongtwo
etc etc . this way you can keep track of songs from the mr8. peace.

I create a new folder for every song, and then navigate to it from the "tree" which is displayed in wavmanager on the left of the wavmanager window.

*edit* oops, yeah... what manning said!

mr8 etc

hey guys
thanks a lot for that. i amazingly managed to save the 2 tracks to a bnew folder just as you guys posted. So ,,,,for 2 tracks it should just be as simple as panning them left and right and saving them yes?
I wanted to ask how i can cut some of the start off each track too,,,cos i decided to miss a bit out at the beginning of the song.
Id bounced it all to 7 and 8 like that on the MR8,,but for some reason they have shown up with just a blank 10 seconds at the start of each file instead
ARRGGH !I will never get my head around this

ummm..... never mind...

hey wait a minute.. why can't I delete this , now useless, post?

mr8 etc

hey mate,,
ANY help,,or attempt at help for me here isnt pointless mate,,,i assure you!
:)

pops. so you just have 2 tracks NOW in ntrack right ?
if so ...just zoom in a bit , (youll see n track will lengthen the track,
and youll get more definition of the wave) and watch the n track time line at
the top. hilite the 10 secs by dragging the mouse from left to right over the track. and SILENCE. repeat for track 2. MAKE SURE YOU SAVE using ntracks save command.
to PAN. bring up ntracks pan for the track by clicking on the LHS of the track. youll see a little vertical track slice appear with pan and volume.
this is where you set your pan.
gotta go soon - got a session. will get back to you on the morrow. peace.
note...REALLY EXPERIMENT WITH NTRACKS zoom features. AND LEARN THEM.
they will help you do precise editing. peace.
a tip...in ntrack (or any editor) try and do any EDIT CUTS near ZERO BOUNDARIES...ie..where the waveform crosses the center horizontal line for the track so you dont get edit CLICKS. peace.

mr8

hey mate
i did that,,,and it is silence,,but what i want to do is remove this part altogether. also,,when i select the part i want to silence/remove,,then try to do it on the next track,,the first ttack part is undone it seems. im hatin this,,,
have a great session man,,,and thanks for trying with me

All the above is good info.

I didn't mean to imply that help was useless, I had only repeated what was already stated by manning (in some slightly lessened accurate form).

Don't bounce tracks on the MR8, just tick all tracks,1-8 or whatever in wavmanager, save them to your pre-defined folder, and take them to N-track to fiddle with.

Much more flexibility this way.

Never hesitate to ask questions! God knows I don't!

mr8

hi CD
I know you didnt mate, thi sis just all so incredibly frustrating for me,,when all i want to do is get one thing finished,,sounding good,,and get on with something else
im finding that im spending more time trying to figure stuff out than i am rwroiting and recording my songs. NOw,,,,,i cant even get the part i dont want cut off the 2 tracks. so i shut N tracks down to start again,,,,,
and it also always opens up with 2 empty tracks sittin there,,
whats that all about? so i got as far as gettinbg my 2 tracks into N Tracks,,then i did what Manning suggested,,but id no idea how to cut those blank parts off. so i tried Delete part,,and all that happened was that the entire track went missing. so i hit undo,,but no luck there.
so i iwll have to start the whole process all over again . jeeeez,,
MUST it be so difficult guys?

C'mon...have some patience with yourself! :D

Make an extra "copy" of your .wav file first, because I'm not positive this is not destructive editing.. but...

By "part", I assume you don't mean an entire track?
If not, then just highlight the offending part, go to "edit" and then "cut" the part.

Probably not the best way to do it, but it works for me!

*edit* to make an extra copy, right click on the files, click "copy" from that drop down menu, then copy them to another folder which is similarly titled.

Yes, it is difficult. Yes, It will take you away from writing and playing. Yes, this does suck at first, but it's worth it, in my opinion.
