Ben Shepherd (soundgarden)
Rick Danko RIP (the band)
Jeff Ament (pearl jam)

Don't remember his name, but the DoubleBass/beatboxer from 'Nizlopi' is fucking amazing, he can shred like anything, beatbox over the top, play guitar... oh, and he knows when to shut up and play root notes - what a musician!

any bass player that knows his role in a band. they're hard to come by some times.

Man this is an old thread resurrected....

My vote would be for my friend and co-writer Mike - he's been the best bass player I've played with :D .

That's because a bassist's role in a band is determined by the member's of each band, and many bands have bass out front with guitars as rhythm instruments. People look at the bass' role in popular music and somehow get the idea that the role they hear a bassist take in these tunes is the role a bassist is supposed to take.

A bass guitar doesn't come with a sticker that says "only use to groove with drummer or back up guitarists." The instrument being an octave lower doesn't dictate it's role. I don't think Miles Davis ever looked over at John Coltrane and told him to stop soloing and start backing up Cannonball because he played tenor and Cannonball was on alto.

Tim Bogert - Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Beck Bogert and Appice gets my vote. He is a great bass player and not many know his work.

Tony Levin
David Hope (Kansas)
Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant)
Rick Anderson (The Tubes)
Roger Glover
Glenn Hughes
:)

no one has mentioned bootsy collins (parlament funkadellic)

has anyone mentioned dusty hill (zztop)?

Lee rocker (stray cats) the stuff he did with an upright bass he didnt play it he attacked it

After listening to CrosbyStillsNash I'd certainly agree with seamus about Steve Stills, he's played some great parts but you'll never see him on the cover of Bass Player.

-Bill Wyman
-Gene Simmons
-John Deacon from Queen
-Kevin Rutmanis (Cows, Melvins, Tomahawk)
-Phil fucking Lynott

I don't know if it's been said, it's a big thread:

Noel Redding...played some very good bass

Jaco Pastorius

I wouldn't sat he's underrated maybe just under remembered.

I had to stick his name in here

The guys from Roxy Music were all great.

Who was the guy that played for Chic? That guy was fantastic.

And John Taylor of Duran Duran was always underrated. Check out Rio or Girls on Film if you don't believe me.

I love it when someone resurrects a 4-year-old thread.... :)
