Most underrated bassists?

It REALLY depends on who, when, where, what, why & how.
For example the original bassist in the George Thorogood Band played precisely what George asked him to do & with nothing spectacular he held it down really, really well. No one remembers him because he did his job.
Bassists in trios stand out because they fill out the sound & space.
Beatles' bass players are given exceptional credit for doing a good job - he was rarely amazing.
JPJones stands out as he was an arranger, was prepared to use bass pedals & thought outside the sqaure 4 while doing that very well too.
Mr. Bruce Thomas from the Attractions was exceptional at playing beyond the beat - but he came AFTER that amazing bass line in watching the Detectives (played by the unremarked upon bassist from the Rumour).
Jimmy Lea from Slade - could he rock, could he write, could he arrange, could anyone remember his name?
Bassists who do their job accept that only exceptional circumstances give them the liimelight. Many ultra famous bassist really aren't THAT famous for their bass playing but rather their company, their behaviour, their attitude to life, their place in the time line etc.
Let's face it what was the last song that Macca played bass on that has a killer bass line?

Another unsung (I won't really say underrated) is Carl Radle; just take a look at his website to see how many important albums he played on, and what he played on them.
