I like the U87 (I've never used the Ai verson before) and the B1 is an ok budget mic... but IMO, over rated by many on this forum.
Just joking. ;)

Has anyone heard this mic yet? If not, how can you say they're overrated? It could be that the positive things people have to say about them are unwarranted, but no one knows until this thing is released.

Given the sort of things people have assumed about this mic I fear that there is no way it can live up to expectations; unless a live and well Marvin Gaye comes with it in the box.

Can anyone provide a link to the SPA mic that ya'll are talking about. I know of SPA doing refurbs, but didn't know that they were going to issue a mic. And, I can't find anything on the net about said mic. Looking at the SPaudio.com site, i'm not finding anything. And, that site sucks..

Check out the PMI-audio forum at

but be sure to bring water-proof boots and a towel, 'cause the drool is at least knee-high.
(By the way I'm quite sure that the mic is gonna be exellent, but ridiculously high expectations is never a good thing.)

The SPA mic isn't even on the market yet... so no one has even seen one yet, much less heard one... so it's all just over rated bullshit hype until proven otherwise.

I'd comment... but, then this thread would turn into a mess. With that said, I'll say Mr. Microphone. :D

Mr. Microphone? How can a mic that helps you pick up girls be overrated? Can a B-1 do that?

Only if you stick it in your pants, although, the C series would be more impressive in that department. :D

I don't know if any of ya'll subscribe to Guitar player, but the recent issue has an interview with the Black Keys. (2 man group following a blues base)

Their most recent release was recorded in a basement with SM-57's, 58's, an AKG C1000, and some sennhiesers(?sp). Media was a Tascam RtR. They recorded the entire release in a 14 hour session w/ a couple of days of mixing.

I have not heard the mic. But, I read all that SP has to say about the mic. He has overated the living shit out of it himself. He needs no help. This new mic will and can never live up to its reputation at $1500. Mark my words, people will gush and trip over themselves to get one. Then, they will post how great and wonderful it is. Later, it will be compared to something-or-other and reality will set in.

Well, you never can tell, but I've marked your words.:)

We might just be surprised by innovative ideas and technologies never before seen in a mic that will change the world of microphone design and recording. But we'll only know for sure when we can buy it from Behringer.

SM57 and SM58 are both over-rated. They work decent enough, but they are certainly over-rated. I was at a music shop yesterday, and they were asking over $100 for a SM57!

The 57 and 58 are hardly overated. Most shops sell 57's at about $79 and the 58 at about $100. Well worth every penny IMO.

Don't buy anything from that music shop... their prices are too high.

The tough part is that unless it's a huge store GC can sell them for less then the little guy as to pay from Shure. It's a sad fact. Furthermore the smaller dealer has to make orders to keep the line. 57's and 58's are such standards that they make the most logical choice for price and popularity. The cheaper mics are pretty useless and the more expensive ones are hard to sell.

Most dealers are trying to get 30-35% profit to pay the guy that sells it, keep the lights on and the doors open. 35%!!! you say? Well, what would GC sell it for if they didn't have to undercut everyone else. Eventually we'll find out. (chances are they are already making 35%)

Yeah, I know, I shop at GC sometimes too but I make sure to treat them like the whores they are. I will not hesitate to return something to GC if I don' like it. I find a use for items from the little guys even when turns out it wont work for me.

Cheers, RD
