Most Overrated Mic

Well I dont know about over where you guys are,
but here in Australia at $429rrp, the SM58 is very overrated!

Shit, you can get a BG3.1 that easily outperforms the SM58 for half the price, (Btw, I'm not saying the BG series or the 3.1's are great mics by any means!)

sm57?

other suggestions?

NO WAY! The SM57 kicks some serious ass! I've listenned to cuts using this mic alone, without extra "fluff" as in effects, compression etc .. recorded to analog tape and have not been less than very impressed! The SM57 is worth all the "hype".

Flatpicker, I'm curious... if you could only own a B1 or 57... which one would it be?
I have a 57 and a B3 and my best pres are the ones on my Aardvark Q10. With this setup I exclusively use the B3 and I'm assuming the B1 would be the same. If I owned a high end, low noise, transformer coupled pre like your Great River, I might be using the 57 as much or more. Why don’t you loan me your GR and I’ll find out? :p

My point is still that for low budget studios, mic’s like the B1/B3 are tremendous investments and are thus not overrated.

By the same token, given certain good pres, the SM57/58 isn't overrated either.

ssooooooooooo
ask a goofy question......stand back........watch the fur fly.
I get it

Overrated uuhmmm,, Let me see .

Any mic that costs > 500 bucks US that never has a Major Recording Artist standing in front of it. LOL

If you have a U87,47,Blue, etc and your recording yourself or anyone else to ride around in the car a listen to,,, then anything over 500 bucks is overated. LOL

Just messing with yall !!!

C1 is greatly overblown. There are better choices at a $200 price point.

IMHO:D

Oh ok, I was just curious to what you thought because I've always respected your opinion... thank you for your answer. :)

PS... the B1 and B3 sound a little different from each other... oh, and I too think the B1 is worth the $80... but IMO, many people on this forum over rate the B1... you know, talk about it as if it was a AT4050 or something.

ditto on the C1.
The B3 on the other hand is a very nice mic for the price.

Thanks. Be careful, though - I was actually WRONG once! (...or twice...or...) ;)

Yeah, the B3's less sibilant, which is why I use it instead of my C1, and haven't bought a B1.

You have a point, there.

You know, now that you mention it, the AT4050 may be overrated. Didn't Fletcher call it a "tinny sounding piece of crap" or something like that? :D

Yeah, I seem to remember reading somewhere that he didn't like it too.

I think the most over rated mic's are the hyped ones not even on the market yet. :D

Hyped <--- spelling ?

Another nod for the C1 although I don't know if it still qualifies as such...it seems you hardly hear it mentioned anymore.

Yet another nod to un-released mics...

Any mic that I want, and can't afford, is an over-rated P.O.S. And my mics can out perform them any day. A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. It is better to have little, than to have nothing. The wisest man uses what he has and wastes little. Confusious say, "You be here 4 ow wa. Go home!" Tinky-winky is definitely not dating a female tele-tubbie. Vintage means that it's drank more beer than the manufacturer suggested, and once it started smoking, they pawned it off. Jim Baker assumed the fetal position over prison and money loss, yet willingly climbed into bed with Tammy every night. Microphones, of any price range, are the first object a child sees when they walk into a room.

Expensive mics fall just as hard as cheap ones.

My mind is a bit wanderyish today...

Blind Cowboy...

don't forget the km184's or c414's. another vote for the 87ai. also the RNC, or yeah that is not a mic . . . .

Useless- C3000B
Aw man! This is how I find out how everything I've recorded in the last six years was a waste of time? At least now I know it's the mics, and not my music that sucks.

I've heard some good e-200s. I think they're very solid mics...just the design is too old, cost is too high to compete these days. It's a good thing CAD is updating the equitek series. (Yay for the E-100!)

Is the Oktava ML-52 really that bad? I notice Guitar Center getting these out at 200 bucks...at least, I think it was 200...

As for my choice for most overrated mic...I'd vote for the 87Ai but I probably shouldn't until i've heard more of them. I'll go with the 414.

Flatpicker said:
Yes, if the U87 Ai was made by Studio Projects and sold for $89, DJL would bash it twice as much as he does the B1! :p
I like the U87 (I've never used the Ai verson before) and the B1 is an ok budget mic... but IMO, over rated by many on this forum.

Yo Sklathill? If you think the 414 is overated, sell me yours cheap- I'm there.-Richie
