the best tone i heard was the sound of a Gretsch Black Falcon
in the RCA dome in INDY last spring it just ran through a wah and a reverb and WOW!

It has always been Beck and Darly, but for the last two albums Todd has been just as big as part of Glassjaw as each of them.
oh. i should have made that a question, not a statement. because i really didn't know.

So many tones to pick from. But the modern hard rock/ metal tones just seems to be a mesa boogie & Pro tools combonation. The best advice is to just do what you feel and do some experiments to find a sound that is best for you. Don't try to copy the sound of today, because it will sound dated. You can pretty much tell an albums year of release by the guitar tones and snare drum.

Angus and Malcom. End of story.

It's not the metal tone you speak of, but my personal favorite rock guitar tones ever. Those guys are tone giants.

As far as heavier bands, a lot of the tones sound the same to me even though I love bands like Meshuggah, Neurosis, and Mastadon. Id probably pick Meantime era Helmet.

i thought they only had one guitar player and the other guy was just a hired gun and didn't play on either of the last 2 records.
you might be thinking about the used. they have another guitar player live to fill things out.

Page Hamiltons tone was huge on that album.

I loved the tone on the Strokes album, so Kudos for that. Overall, live and on disc John Petrucci of Dream Theater seems to have one of the tightest distorted sounds I've ever heard. He plays Music Man guitart through a Mesa setup which will always wield great results, but when he "chunks"....wow :)

Let's see.........
Metallica: Master Of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, Metallica (Black Album)
Ministry: The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste, Psalm69, Filth Pig
Slayer: Seasons In The Abyss, Diabolus In Musica, God Hates Us All

To me, that's some of the best EVER guitar playing!!!!! :)
check out some Lamb of God.

They use Mesa Boogie Mark IV's and their tone is awesome.

Ken Andrews of Failure, Year of the Rabbit, On
fun fact. they played in fresno, ca in 1996. a friend of mine hit the singer in the head with his own demo tape during the performance. it was quite a good shot.

Gary Moore
James Hetfield
Pete Anderson
Vince Gill
Duane Allman
Angus

In the guitar wankers of yesteryear category: I liked Blues Saraceno's tone. Very fat tube sound. Juicy...

I have a...

...Marshall TSL100, Tube Screamer (new model) and a stack. Greenbacks on the top, g12T's on the bottom.

Electric butter. I'm happy.

Definately Angus and Malcom.

I also like the Mustaine tone, which IIRC is Rich Bich in a Mesa. Particularly from Countdown to Extinction.

Jeez, I can't believe nobody's said Stevie Ray Vaughan yet.

I thought everybody wanted that SRV tone.

You are right.. He used a Marshall preamp on Countdown. Not sure where I got the idea he used Mesa.

In any case, I think he has one of the best metal tones.
