I don't really know why I answer some posts and not others, but I guess I feel like the long time posters need to take turns trying to find out if some noob is worth helping. Sometimes my number is just up. I am also more likely to try to help if the request is *possible*.

"........So I guess my most annoying question (most depressing, really) is, "I want to get radio-ready recorded sound like the big studios in an untreated bedroom for $100 or less. I'm just doing rap vocals over pirated beats. What presets do I use on my tube preamp to get that sound? Oh yeah- and the rapper sucks. Does that make a difference?"-Richie

Actually, I find the answers to be more annoying than the question.

In order:
1. You need experience
2. You need great sounding insruments (and, oddly enough, not good recording equipment)
3. You need a great acoustically treated room
and, when all else fails: XXXX famous engineer can make a gold record with an SM58 and a Soundblaster card.

Love the transition to: It is all in the performance.

All in hopes of not having to actually buy good mics, pre-amps, monitors etc. and learning to use them properly.

My favorite is something like:

I just bought a new computer 8 GB RAM and two 500 GB hard drives, a new Fender Strat, a new set of Tama drums and spent over $800 on a cool Mackie mixer. Man the cables at Musician's Friend are expensive - cost me over $350! Anyways, it all cost a little over $5 grand. I need a mic now and really like the sound Paul Rogers gets with Queen. I only have about $100 left is a SM57 a good one or should I go with an M-audio? I just want it to sound good.

I need a mic quick please reply quick or i will explode:laughings:

"I want to sound like GG Allin. I've got a $10,000 budgut. Will a pair of U87's do?" :drunk:

I hate those guys.

My singing is reminiscent of Bobcat Goldthwait having a conniption fit. Which mic will make me sound like Barry White?

I recommend the Telefunken Ela M 251 just to be safe

You should get two... they're small.

My friend knows this guy who's roomate's uncle is cousins with the ex-wife of the physical therapist of a plumber who once unclogged the toilets in a building next door to a multi-million dollar studio, said that mic would make me sound more like Frank Sinatra than Barry White.
