Generally speaking, noise reduction made narrow track machines possible and it isn't really an option to disengage as normal recording practice, even though you can.
This makes sense.
I had been trying to figure out why my click was bleeding into neighboring tracks, and the whole time I was blaming on my leaky headphones, so I got new ones. I then figured out it was just bleeding because of the tape width.
I'm personally not sure yet which I like better. So far, at the discretion of others, I've been recording stuff with the DBX off. One time I did a drum mic test with DBX off and DBX on and I'm almost inclined to say I liked the one with DBX on more. Sometimes I want the lo-fi hiss. But I'm starting to think that in general I might be benefitting from this deck more if I start engaging it. Either way, I love my 388.
