In this post, http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=123959 ASIO drivers are mentioned.

I am running SONAR Producer and a Delta 44. Audio recording only.

I recently switched from monitoring through a Mackie 1202 and now use a Presonus Central Studio. This has caused the big "echo" monster to rear it's ugly head.

Using ver. 5.10 drivers for the 44. Latency only gets down to 11.5 msecs.

Is it possible to get it lower with the 44?

*On edit - I just went to the M-Audio site again and it advertises that the 44 is capable on zero latency monitoring. Is this correct?

I'm not familar with ASIO drivers.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

To get zero latency you have to monitor directly off the sound card. You can do this using the patchbay in the Delta Mixer. However, this will not allow you to hear any effects you are applying in your software (i.e., input monitoring).

If you want to use input monitoring, you should be able to get something like 1.7ms latency throught the Delta 44. To do so you need to lower the latency setting in the Delta mixer. Set it to the lowest # of samples it offers. Go into Sonar and reprofile the card and move the latency slider all the way to the left.

Warning, depending on your system, you might start experiencing dropouts when you do this. If so, you can try increasing the latency setting in the Delta mixer. If you end up with over 5ms latency or so, you will probably hear an echo.

Thanks!

Any additional info on ASIO drivers?

Also, I'm coming from the 44 outputs directly into the Central Station. Am I not monitoring the outputs of the soundcard? If not, what my settings be in the Delta 44 mixer?

Without input monitoring turned on, I get a signal on the armed track but nothing on the A buss which is where the armed track is going through. Is this right?

What do you want to know about ASIO drivers?

The signal goes into the sound card and then can either be routed directly to the out connections on the sound card, OR thorough the computer where it is processed and then sent to the outs of the sound card.

Taking the latter route, which you do using input monitoring, will create latency because of the time required for processing the signal.

Should I use them over the WDM drivers?

This clears up a lot for me.

Thanks.

You should use whichever ones give you the best performance. I use the WDM drivers because it is newer technology and supported by Microsoft; however if ASIO gives YOU better performance, than you shoud use ASIO.

Some sound card manufacturers have better ASIO drivers than they do WDM, since ASIO has been around longer. M-Audio seems to have decent WDM drivers IMHO.

By the way, you said you are using version 5.10. I'm pretty sure all their drivers start with that designation, and are distinguished by the next set of numbers 5.10.27, 5.10.36, etc.

The lastest are 5.10.46 I believe.
