I picked up a set of monitors from this guy. Didn't know if they where good or not. but I got a good deal. Then I remembered I had a set of monitors in the attic. I don't know if there any good or not. There nice and heavy, the magnet on the 8?in is huge. Has a tweater and about a 1 1/2" port tuning hole. I opened it up and nothing tells me what it is, just say's"made in tiawan,ROC". could theses be any good?I haven't checked them to see if there 4 ohm or 8. Don't know if I know how to check them. Can I check them with an OHM METER and how? I have one I use on my car but I never check ohm on a speaker....Any help?

Ummm Flash, not to demean U or n-e thing of the sort, but do you
know what monitors are (other than the fact the look like speakers)??

What are the name of these "MONITORS" you just bought?
As far as the driver(s) impedance is concerned, yes you can check the with an Ohmmeter to determine it's impedance, but other than that, what makes you think these are monitors? Did the seller tell you they were monitors?
Monitors are used for sonically judging the outcome of one's recording and mixes with out the coloration provided by regular
home speakers (hence the reason monitors are mfd at a flat-response spectrum level). Home speakers uasually contain added
bass & mid artifacts to offset the lack of proper listening room levels. While one may adjust the bass, mid and treble frequencies
on a home stereo to compensate for lack of room frequency level
with home speakers, monitors freq range should be kept flat to determine, during rec'ing &mixing,if addtl boost or cut is needed.

If possible, compare your speakers to MONITOR mfrs in catalogs, magazines or online to determine if they are indeed montiors and what brand and model#. Or perhaps you can provide a pic of them.

Hey there, the set I just got from the guy are Digital Designs model #LS161. The problem i'm having with them is I can't find anything out about them. I found one site in Tenn. (recording studio) that say's they have a pair. If I go to Digital Designs on the net The only one's they list are DD161..... You may be right that the other set may not be ref. monitors... I can't find out what they are, and I bought them at a pawn shop, I remember the guy saying they were but you can't always believe what you hear. Do ref. monitors usually have ported holes? I see no where on the cabinets where it said anything and nothing on the speakers them self. I just remember when I got them at the pawn shop I remember the were so heavy for being small cabinets. Like I said there's a hugh mag. on the back of that 8".

Huge magnet often means an old driver. And yes, reference monitors may be ported.

I'm willing to bet that they're not LS161, but DD161d's. I think the 161's were some of Digital Designs first monitors, perhaps dating back to 1986. I found the specs for the DD 161's online, but found absolutely no mention of LS161 on google or deja.

ya I know, can't figure out where I found them but i believe it was a recording studio in Tenn. that had a pair. I left a E-mail at Digital Designs, hopefully they will reply with some info. The specs on the DD161 look like these speakers though. 6 1/2" and the small tweeter for speakers...

Probably the same ones. Maybe slighlty older model. Hope that helps.

How do the spec's look to you guy's? are they O.K. or do I still need to invest in a set of event 20/20's or something?

Flash-

Do some mixes on them, see how they turn out. If you can get a good sound easily by mixing on them...then they are good.

thing people forget about monitors is that its not how they sound...but, how they sound to *you*. If you know where they lack (like...in bass response probably..in this context) then you can just know to mix a certain way to make up for it. that said - its hard to mix in what you can't hear :)

so, try them out...listen to some cds on them...and draw your own conclusions on whether you need something else.

i have a question... what connections are on the back of these things.

There's like a plastic hex nut (2) on the back with a hole in the top of the hex that looks like you can plug some kind of plug in it, (about a 1/8")and at the bottom of the piece that the hex screws onto there's a hole also that you can put a wire in and then just tighten up the hex. That's the one that I'm using.Hope that made sence...

Yea, i have a feeling those aren't monitors, not even from a real speaker cpmany. I've done searches on this before and i've known peole to buy into a scam with speakers that alleged to be "monitors". Some dodgy looking guys come up to you in a parking lot and say that they got too many monitors in their order or something and need to trade them so their boss doesn't get mad?

No monitor will ever use the regular "screw the wire onto the back" method of connecting.

Is this kinda what happened or am i just ona tangent?

not at all, I traded some of my stuff for the monitors from a guy I know very well. He got them from a friend that he knew. He even told me he was with the guy when they bought them in tampa. He thinks it was like '87 or '88. I'm still waiting on a e-mail from digital designs. I'll let you know how it turns out. Oh, about that scam thing, I've seen that happen also. shady people out there...

Finally got a reply from digital designs.

The LS161's were renamed the DD161's. They have upgrades to handle more power over the years and are going to be released again hopefully this year. The current listed stats on the 161's are basically the same just higher power handling now. The LS161's were rated for 60w of power and the new ones are rated for 125-150w of power. Thank you for your inquiry. /tek

After checking out the back again there is a check mark in the [ ] 50 watt handling power box. no wonder there distorting out when I try turning my Hafler TA1600 up. Also, the guy I bought them from told me the other day that he blew the main speakers and had to replace them. I'm gonna pull them aprt tonight and find out what he put in there. I'll let ya know...
