Mixing Workshop

Has there been a previous thread that dealt with noobies (including myself) who are having difficulty getting started? IOW, what about a thread that facilitated a mixing workshop?

It would start by someone posting a raw bass track (or portion of). Then everyone gives input..gets pre-mixed by the person who posted the bass track. Then the raw drum track gets added...everyone gives input...gets pre-mixed. Then the raw guitar track gets added...yada yada yada...you get the idea.

In the end, there is a thread reference that can be used as a before-after comparison for those who do not know what to listen for when in the mixing phase. It think it would be both fun and very informative.

btw - I have some tracks that can use this type of guidance.

Thoughts?
 
It's a nice idea.

The main problem I see with it is that a bass track you record might need to be treated completely differently to a bass track I've recorded because it's going to have been recorded in a different room, with a different player, a different instrument and with different gear.

So it would be useful to the person who's original tracks were being critiqued but I'd have to question the usefulness of those tracks as a reference once the whole thing had been done.

Sorry :( , I hate to put a downer on a nice idea but that's what sprung to mind for me.

Have you tried the mixing clinic? That's a very useful part of this forum.
 
That, or it's probably easier to just jump in to the Public Mixing "Contests" that happen frequently.... they're not really contests, just a way to get everyone's take on mixing the same set of tracks.... for novices, it's a great learning tool.
 
Kevin, thanks. Not really a downer...just more information to help out. It would also be much different based on genres too. I'll look at the mixing clinic too.

Bruce, where are the mixing contests usually held? Who initiates them? I'm there! :D

In the Clinic... usually the thread starts with PMC #xx (I think they're at 10 now or something...)

There's also the impromptu "Different kind of mixing contest" threads.... also in the Clinic.....
